here's a draft... anyone able to help spruce it up?  i spent a crazy amount of time formatting the survey results since google doesn't have a quick way to share graphed responses.  i was thinking that maybe we should add the description of the working groups on our website and/or within the email itself?  thoughts?

also, from the spreadsheet you sent out sharon, it appears we didn't actually get many people's emails at the potluck... maybe 20 in total.  i'm hoping we're not missing anyone major.

Greetings from the Movement Space Project!

Here's a quick behind-the-scene update about how our plans are shaping up to open a new dynamic social justice-oriented community space!

Back in October we held our first-ever community potluck gathering to unveil the results from the MSP survey, develop plans for our working groups, and engage in group visioning exercises.  Thanks to everyone you came, brought food, and participated!

For those of you who were unable to attend the potluck, we've posted the survey summary results on our website.  You can also view the inspiring video clips we watched of established movement spaces from our friends in the Bay Area and Barcelona.

Like many of you, members of the MSP Core Team spent weeks knee-deep in post-Sandy relief mobilization and helping coordinate an empowering city-wide response to the ongoing crisis.  While Hurricane response work may have temporarily thrown us off course, the ways in which churches, neighborhood centers and public spaces transformed overnight into relief organizing hubs also points to the need for more permanent spaces that build movements, strengthen connections between communities, and unleash our collaborative potential.

A few weeks ago we met with our legal support team from the CUNY's Community Economic Development clinic to discuss incorporation options that match our values and will allow for effective management of our future space.  And over this weekend, the Core Team is having a leadership retreat to hash out a more long-term work plan, provide direction to the launching of working groups, and elaborate on ways in which all of you can support this collective projects in ways big and small.

So stay tuned for further updates and working group meeting dates.  And as always, we welcome your feedback, questions and creative ideas!

In solidarity,

Movement Space Project

I think this email looks great, Lucas. I agree that we should include a description of the working groups on the website and mention them in this email. I made a few very minor changes to the email and changed the hyperlink url of 'survey summary results' (in your version, Lucas, it went to the 'take the survey' page).

Thanks for doing this Lucas.

Nice edits Sharon!

I created a new "get involved" tab on the MSP website... borrowing from the last question we had in the FAQ section.  It includes a description of the working groups taken from something that Lara whipped up for the potluck.

Look good?  We could either include this language in the email blast or simply link to this new tab on the website.

This looks really great Lucas.  thanks.  And good edits Sharon.

I kind of want shy away from using "MSP."  I'd rather shorten to movement space.  Could you change all the MSPs to movement space?  I think they can be kind of silly and jargony-alienating.

Thanks Lucas! Looks great! I agree with Jan about "MSP." Also 3 tiny edits:

"behind-the-scene" --> "behind-the-scenes"

"collective projects" --> "collective project"

"MSP Core Team" --> "the Movement Space Core Team"

Also, maybe I'm being dense, but I feel a little bit confused by the paragraph about Sandy relief. How does the use of churches etc. as relief hubs point to the need for more community spaces & spaces for building movements? Is the idea that the number of existing community spaces was insufficient to meet the emergency needs, & therefore we need more of them? If so, what does this have to do with movement-building? I feel like the emphasis should be more clearly on the point that community spaces are awesome & essential, rather than that there should be a greater number of them. Maybe something like:

"
While Hurricane response work may have temporarily thrown us off course, the overnight transformation of many churches, neighborhood centers, and public spaces into relief organizing hubs also highlights the enormous importance of spaces where we can come together to address issues of shared concern, strengthen connections between communities, and unleash our collaborative potential."

Also, I spoke with Jodi this afternoon & she's down to join us on Sunday. Left a message for Teresa but haven't heard back yet. Excited for the retreat!
