They built 14 categories of forest stands, ML models to recognize the stand type from satellite data, then detected transitions from one type of stand to another, and tried to infer what sort of disturbance regimes led to what kind of successions. But the tree species diversity of these stands in Canada seems to be quite low as compared to the diversity we might expect in India though.

More papers like https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-026-68989-x study the relationship between such successions with the resistance of the forest to climate disturbances like droughts - are the metamorphosed stands entering into a greater resistance regime? This paper builds a method to determine leaf longevity.
