For inferring paddy https://essd.copernicus.org/preprints/essd-2025-711/essd-2025-711.pdf they identify specific phenological patterns of leaf-up and flooding dynamics. Code available.
For inferring sugarcane https://essd.copernicus.org/articles/16/4931/2024/ they use # months of tall height crops and the crop being grown for up to four consecutive years. Only output data available, code not available I think.
But if these do work then the identification problem is solved for two of most water guzzling crops.
