Got to know about a new format GeoZarr https://eox.at/2026/02/visualizing-geozarr/ which embeds CRS info inside Zarrs. This seems to mean that for large rasters, we need not maintain both Zarr (for analysis) and COGs (for rendering). Just have GeoZarrs and use Titiler to serve tiles for mapping frontends. Hope to understand more of this as we plan to build out pan-India maps and dashboards instead of the tehsil-level outputs we are doing currently.
Another new format that's come out is RaQuet https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/raquet-raster-data-apache-parquet-javier-de-la-torre-chice/, to store raster data in GeoParquet. Makes this accessible through querying engines like DuckDB. This seems to be appropriate for the approach we've taken in the CoRE stack of representing landscapes as nested and connected spatial entities for which vector-data analysis tools like DuckDB are appropriate, and having raster data mapped easily to these will make several kinds of analysis easier.
