The annual subscription fee is quite high and I don't want to renew it. I don't use any of the integration stuff like payroll, etc. and I'm NOT going to switch to Quickbooks Online. But I still am going to need access to the company history for tax purposes for some time.
I have tried to find out what happens when the subscription ends with no luck. Some say nothing, some say just updates stop working and some say that the software completely stops working. I'm aware that Intuit renamed the software maintenance for the desktop to "subscription" to confuse the issue.
Last year when this came up I talked to Intuit sales and they said that the only thing the subscription gives me is access to the current versions, because I'm not using payroll or any of the internet integrations, and whenever I want to I can just decline to renew the subscription and all that will happen is I won't be able to get updates. I asked them if my computer dies can I install the old version on a new PC and they said yes, as long as I have my license key it will activate it just won't update to the new version. And of course there will be no support if something goes wrong or if I try loading it on a newer windows version where it was never supported.
But I frankly don't trust this because of all the noise coming from Intuit about pushing people to QB Online. (I am so done with this constant harping on software subscription it has really ruined a lot of the fun of running my own business I had when I started doing it 12 years ago. When I started my business i was maybe $1000 for a copy of QB, Office, and a few other bits of software and all of it was perpetual license and you never needed to buy anything again, and I ran those copies for at least a half a decade. Today it's around $4k a year and the software companies force it every year. Software costs have over exceeded inflation by a huge margin and I'm so happy to kiss that greed goodbye. Not to even mention the new versions are just more bloated with garbage nobody wants and run slower. But that's a different discussion.)
Once your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) subscription lapses, you won't be able to access your company file. To avoid losing your accounting data, it's best to create a backup copy. You can either schedule it or do it manually. To learn more about creating a backup, check out this article: Back up your QuickBooks Desktop company file.
I paid for a perpetual license when I bought QB and only paid for the maintenance on it which up until some version or other would give you upgrades as part of the maintenance. Then if you stopped maintenance, you would be stuck at that version since you wouldn't be entitled to upgrade, but you still could continue to use that version.
What you are telling me is in conflict with what Intuit support told me last year which is the entire reason I upgraded to QB 2023. I'll just have to go back to my prior year installers and reinstall an older version.
I have QBD 2021 and I'm not go8ng into the cloud. I've been with QB since 2005 and gave bought several versions of the desktop and have the cds as well. How do I continue to use my QBD without an active subscription?
If you're using the 2021 stand-alone license, yes, you can continue to access your QBDT files on your computer without purchasing an active subscription. However, after May 31, 2024, all the 2021 versions will be discontinued. With this, you'll stop receiving the security updates and online services, such as:
Rest assured that you can still use the program, but it is recommended to upgrade it to ensure the security of your data. I suggest browsing this article to learn more about the discontinued software: QuickBooks Desktop Service Discontinuation Policy.
On the contrary, if you're using the Plus (annual) version, you'll no longer be able to use or access your account. Your company file will remain on your computer, but you'll need to re-activate the service to open or view the data.
You're always welcome to ask any other questions regarding your data in QuickBooks. If you have other concerns about adding some entries to your books, keep me posted, and I'll guide you through the process.
