Permissions and Citation for CoralNet Images in Academic Paper

Hello everyone,

I’m currently working on my undergraduate thesis that focused on coral reef species classification and would like to use images from the CoralNet platform. Could you clarify:

1. Whether using these images is permissible for academic publication?
2. If allowed, what is the correct citation format?

I’d appreciate guidance on:
- Copyright/licensing requirements (e.g., CC-BY-NC).
- How to attribute both the original data provider (e.g., NOAA, AIMS) and CoralNet.
- Examples of image-specific citations.

any public image on coralnet is permissible to use in academic work. Please contact the owners of that source for how to best cite them. We can help put you in touch if needed. You can cite CoralNet itself using these papers: https://coralnet.ucsd.edu/about/#papers
