Join us on Tuesday, May 24 at 7 pm for a short presentation from Naomi
Barrettara about her work studying copyright issues at the
Metropolitan Opera:

My most recent project has been looking into the Live in HD
transmissions by the Met, and the copyright issues involved in that.
Some of the research is more geared towards the power struggle for
control over the intellectual property of media between the Opera
Company itself and the Unions of musicians and stage hands it employs,
some of it is looking at the different cultural products the Met
produces and how those are shaped by copyright issues. I have also
done a bit of research on their different licensing agreements for use
of the video material produced by the Live in HD broadcasts for
educational programs. In general, my research thus far really
demonstrates how restrictive copyright law can hinder, or completely
cripple innovation in the opera art form. (here is the Met's Live in
HD website, so you have a better idea of what it is:

Afterwards, we will have a discussion, and sing some of Madame
Butterfly. (Just kidding, though I believe it is in the public
domain).

Please join us at Vig Bar at 12 Spring St. at the corner of Elizabeth
in Nolita. We'll be in the back room.

CopyNight is a monthly social gathering of people interested in
restoring balance in copyright law. We meet over drinks once a month
in many cities to discuss new developments and build social ties
between artists, engineers, filmmakers, academics, lawyers, and many
others.
