Greetings from JMS!
Jagrutha Mahila Sanghatane (JMS) is Dalit Madiga Women Agricultural Laborers' Collective in Raichur District (Karnataka - India) initiated in 1999. The sanghatane office is at Pothnal (Village), 70 kms from Raichur and JMS operates in four blocks - Sindhanur, Manvi, Maski and Sirwar) - in the district.
Post-pandemic, 2022- 2023 has been a challenging year for JMS to resume the community accountability processes. JMS through its community leadership tried to connect to the communities by addressing the challenges. Here are a few updates on our rights-based community work. 1. In COVID times : COVID-19 and the lockdown brought unanticipated challenges to a vast number of agricultural labourers and women who are members of JMS. The lockdown created anxiety and stress as migrant members were stuck in cities. Many migrants footed their way back home and some took whatever means of transport by night, facing the heavy batons of police. Read more..

2.Touching Young Lives : Youth in and around the villages of Pothnal in the district of Raichur (Karnataka) narrated the unforeseen challenges that they were facing in their villages during the pandemic. This included educational institutions being closed, being restricted to homes, being cut off from their friends, not having any facility to keep them engaged with academic matters, Read more..

3. Janadhikara Abhiyaana [Citizen Rights Campaign]: Citizen Rights Campaign of Jagrutha Mahila Sanghatane {JMS}, a Dalit women agricultural labourers' collective, captures the process of mobilising and engaging with the community as a whole in a village for their basic public services which they should enjoy as the basic rights of citizens. The process of holding discussions in the community, identifying common issues, deciding representation and then negotiating with the public authorities is captured in the story. Read more.

4. Social Security : In 2019, JMS initiated Janadhikara ( Citizen’s Rights) campaign in all villages of JMS constituency. When the campaign was organized in Pothnal Gram Panchayat covering 3 villages, the senior citizens in the village shared that their pension was stopped suddenly for more than 8 months and they are facing difficulties to manage their basic needs and livelihood. 5.Right to Health Campaign : Right to Health and Maternal Health Services is the continued campaign of JMS, extended over 20 years. It stems from the larger vision of JMS for citizens’ fundamental right to live with dignity and well-being. The campaign for the right to health began as part of Dalit women’s claiming spaces and public services in the context of the historical segregation, exclusion and discrimination that they faced from public spaces and public institutions including healthcare centres. 6. Right to Work : In the year 2022-2023 mobilized 6,700 agricultural labourer families (Total labourers :33,500 ;women-23,500, Men-10,000) agricultural laborers to access the work and wages under MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act). On average households received 80 days of work which created and Rs. 16.08 crores (1961586.34 USD)of income generated for 33,500 agricultural laborers.
