[Our march – towards the Constitution]

Jagrutha Mahlia Sangatahne is conducting the Constitution strengthening campaign in Raichur district. As part of this campaign, JMS reached out to 17 government schools in Manvi, Sindhanur, Maski and Sirwar Talukas of Raichur district to raise awareness on constitutional values and to generate discussions and to renew commitment to strengthen the Constitution.

Sessions in the schools: JMS initiated the campaign in the local government schools during the summer of 2024. A total of 17 schools of four talukas, coming under 12 Gram Panchayats were focused. About 2000 children of the high school participated. Also, in each of the schools, all the teachers too participated in the sessions.
JMS developed a participatory model for this campaign. It includes the following:
- A song on constitution and its values: This was developed through a workshop by Dalit poet Danappa Maski organized for Dalit women leaders from the communities.
- Banners and slogans: Flex banners are developed on the Constitution. A set of 12 slogans for people to internalise the values of the Constitution are developed by JMS karyakarthas.
- Songs: JMS women leaders have selected some common folksongs on Child rights, struggles, women’s rights which communicate the constitution values.
- Preamble: Preamble is printed to distribute among participants and recited by the children during the campaign
- Quiz for school children: A short very general quiz on the Constitution for school children is developed.
- Skit and role plays: A few scenarios to generate discussion on the constitutional values are developed in which student volunteers can participate during the school sessions.
- A 1.5-hour module for the school children: Combining some of the elements above a module to engage children on the Constitutional Values is developed by JMS.

Understanding Constitution Values in Preamble
Engaging the students on the preamble of the Indian Constitution, giving meaning and understanding and linking to their daily lives with examples. Sovereignty, Socialist, Secular, and Democratic Republic, giving the broader understanding of each word with ground-level local-level examples and the importance of the preamble and how it represents our country.

Highlighting Fundamental Rights through Skits
Discussion on six fundamental rights for the citizens, such as the right to equality, the right to freedom, the right against exploitation, the right to freedom of religion, cultural and educational rights, and constitutional remedies. Each of these rights will be explained to students by invoking their peers in the skit on local-level issues and also introducing them to Articles 14 and 21 A.
Article 14: Equality before the law or equal protection of the laws in the Indian territory
Article 21 (A): Provide free and compulsory education for all children in the age group of six to fourteen years

To address the right to equality, work will be done on the gender inequality at home, as associated in Articles 14 and 21A. The right to freedom play will be done on child marriage, giving an explanation about it, the Child Marriage Prohibition Act 2006, information about the child help line (1098), as well as the child labour prohibition act, upholding fraternity and political justice by activating voting and their participation in elections.
