Don't be fooled into thinking that brown gravy mix is just for making
- ta da! - brown gravy. Due to the economy, more and more people are
cooking at home rather than eating out or buying fast food; and it's
great to be able to rely upon a mix to inexpensively round out a
meal ... especially since we're all so pressed for time these days,
too, with work, long commutes, and our kids' soccer games. But trust
me - you can use brown gravy mix to boost flavor in so many recipes,
rather than just making a sauce to pour over meatloaf or a roast. Even
if you're brand new to home cooking, you can serve a meal with
fabulous flavor by using something as simple as a mix to make a dinner
that won't break your family's food budget.
In fact, use the brown gravy mix as an integral part of that meatloaf
- mix 1 or 2 tablespoons in with the beef, and your dinner will gain a
richness that belies the simplicity of the ingredients. (IMHO - as
someone who has won or placed in more than 50 cooking contests and has
tried a lot of sponsor ingredients in the process of tinkering with
recipes! - makes the best brown gravy mix. Not only is it easy to use,
but it has great flavor. And, best of all, rather than coming in a
packet that can spoil if not used in its entirety, it comes in a
resealable jar to keep it fresh between uses. But I digress.
Here are some other ideas to make your home-cooked meals extra special
by using something as simple as brown gravy mix: mix a bit in with
ground beef when making burgers, or prepare some as a sauce to brush
over the burgers as they cook (or grill - summer's gotta come soon,
right?). Brush that same sauce over a roast, too. Add some of the mix
into marinades, so that the flavor is infused into meat or tofu (brown
gravy mix is also appropriate for vegetarians). Stir a small amount
into a meat sauce for pasta. Sprinkle it over potatoes before roasting
them ... really, the possibilities are endless!
I hope I've encouraged you to create some great meals using this all-
purpose ingredient. "Brown gravy mix" is such an insufficient term,
when there are SO many things you can do with it beyond just making
gravy!
