I would considered myself to be quite proficient/advanced with Inventor having used it for the last 3 years and designed a few plants with it, using Tube and Pipe and Frame Generator heavily. We are also looking at using AutoCAD electrical and the Electrical Cable routing module of Inventor.

So outside of the extra processing power required to design in Inventor over Plant3D, I can't see a single positive reason to use Plant3D over Inventor for all the modelling. We have the processing power covered by having brand new specially developed CAD machines, and we have developed a modelling structure that does not require us to have very large assemblies open all the time, we have everything broken down into sub assemblies for each building and multiple sub assemblies for each building, so we rarely ever need each complete building open and almost never need the entire plant level open all at once.

I plan on trying to run this on a 32 bit windows xp machine on Monday to see if I'm running into a similar problem that we are having with regular autocad 2012 and novell server in windows 7. If anyone else can think of something else I might try to rectify this I would be very greatful. Unfortunately I am on a deadline for some submissions so if I can't solve this I might have to recreate stuff in 2D for the time being.

Built on the AutoCAD software platform, AutoCAD P&ID and AutoCAD Plant 3D bring modern design to plant designers and engineers. AutoCAD P&ID software allows you to create, modify, and manage schematic piping and instrumentation diagrams. AutoCAD Plant 3D adds 3D models, including piping, equipment, support structures, generation of isometric, and orthographic drawings. AutoCAD Plant 3D includes the features of AutoCAD P&ID. The Plant SDK provides development tools for both AutoCAD P&ID and AutoCAD Plant 3D software, and enables you to extend the features of the ObjectARX SDK for AutoCAD.

Source code samples that show you how to use the AutoCAD Plant SDK are included with the SDK. They are located in the Samples folder under PnID, Piping, and Common. The Docs subfolder in the Plant SDK contains a developer guide, plantsdk_dev.chm, and a reference guide, plantsdk_ref.chm.

Plant 3D is an Autodesk application targeted to the design and layout of process plant facilities. It has the tools and features designers need to create detailed plant models, including piping, structural and equipment built on the familiar AutoCAD platform. Using spec-driven technology and standard parts catalogs, designers can streamline the placement of piping, equipment, support structures, and other plant components.

Changing to 2D wireframe with silhouettes off can significantly improve performance. If dispsilh is turned off to improve performance in wireframe, isolines should be set to 4.
