Integrating ICT and new media to traditional methods of community
organising and advocacy

Five day residential workshop, 20th - 24th June 2011

Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India

Organised by: Mahiti & Parishkaran


This workshop aims to strengthen the capacity of civil society efforts
to run campaigns that use traditional methods of community mobilising
and advocacy as well as integrate new media tools required to garner
widespread visibility and support.

Workshop will explore skills such as resource mapping, games, songs,
theatre with media along with ICT and new media tools like audio-
visual media, print media, use of mobile phones, and social media. The
workshop will also propose the use of these tools to create
fundraising efforts.

Context:

This workshop aims to revisit approaches used for campaigns,
strengthen traditional skills of community mobilising and advocacy and
learn and integrate ICT and new media tools to current practises and
activities. The workshop will explore campaign tools where the
community is the driver of messages, needs and solutions and strive to
provide tools that enhance the impact on visibility and reach. The
workshop will also explore the use of these tools for fundraising and
effective communications that help in fundraising. The workshop will
have resources consisting of practitioners and experts in these tools.
The sessions will be focussed on hands-on skill building and having
participants share and learn from each other's experiences.

The Objectives will be:

analyse tools used by organisations in their current activities
and campaigns

strengthen traditional tools that focus on community-centric
approach to campaigns
*

explore emerging role of ICT in campaigns: a special focus on
mobile phones and social networks
*

build strategy integrating traditional with new media techniques
to reach out to multiple audiences including supporters and donors

Participants Profile:

This workshop is best suited for trainers, community organisers,
campaigners and communication staff.
*

Maximum number of participants for the workshop will be Fourty
(40)
*

The medium of instruction of the workshop is English

Basic criteria for participants:

*

Working knowledge of English
*

Basic knowledge in computer and internet
*

Training and community organising experience of a minimum 6 to
12 month (preferable)
*

Post workshop commitment of at least 6 to 12 months to the
representing organisation
*

There will be a selection process based on your application

Workshop fee:

Participants will have to pay a registration fee of Rs. 6,000/-, which
will cover costs of food, accommodation, training material and field
trip expenses (if any) etc.

Limited number of travel grants are available for participants with no
alternative financial support. Participants will have to bear the
travel expenses.
