Meade State Park was originally carved out of the Turkey Track Ranch in 1927. The park rests in the high plains of southwest Kansas, just west of the Red Hills. Meade Lake has 80 acres of water and 440 surrounding acres of campsites and wildlife area. Fishing is allowed in the lake year-round with motorized boating restricted to fishing only and no wake speed. Bluegill, Channel Cat & Flathead Catfish, Trout, Saugeye, Crappie and Largemouth Bass are plentiful and provide excellent opportunities for the angler.
General Location: The Lake Ming Road exit off the Alfred Harrell Highway leads down to the lake. There is a sign at the West Beach which marks the half mile road to the campground overlooking the Kern River. This retreat is only 10 miles from Bakersfield.
Lake Ming, which boasts a surface area of 104 acres, was dedicated in 1959 to Kern County Supervisor Floyd Ming. Hills surround the lake, and the Greenhorn Mountains stretch along the eastern horizon. From a hilltop picnic ground overlooking the area, the view is soul-stirring.

In addition, stable isotope analysis (carbon and nitrogen) indicated a decrease in the nutritional value of zooplankton to consumers (e.g., Razorback Sucker larvae) since quagga mussels became established, impacting Razorback health and survival.

The mussels also degrade the water flavor for drinking water facilities, clog up sprinklers at golf courses, impact fisheries, and require extra repairs and maintenance for boat owners. For infested states, the costs to live with quagga is hundreds of millions of dollars per year.

The lake has got its name after Elwood Mead, a professor and an engineer specializing in building dams.
