The notebook used in this post can be found in the amazon-sagemaker-examples GitHub repo. SageMaker geospatial makes the data query extremely easy. We will use the following code to specify the location and timeframe for satellite data.

In the following code snippet, we first define an AreaOfInterest (AOI) with a bounding box around the Lake Mead area. We use the TimeRangeFilter to select data from January 2021 to July 2022. However, the area we are studying may be obscured by clouds. To obtain mostly cloud-free imagery, we choose a subset of images by setting the upper bound for cloud coverage to 1%.

Meade State Park was originally carved out of the Turkey Track Ranch in 1927. The park rests in the high plains of southwest Kansas, just west of the Red Hills. Meade Lake has 80 acres of water and 440 surrounding acres of campsites and wildlife area. Fishing is allowed in the lake year-round with motorized boating restricted to fishing only and no wake speed. Bluegill, Channel Cat & Flathead Catfish, Trout, Saugeye, Crappie and Largemouth Bass are plentiful and provide excellent opportunities for the angler.

General Location: The Lake Ming Road exit off the Alfred Harrell Highway leads down to the lake. There is a sign at the West Beach which marks the half mile road to the campground overlooking the Kern River. This retreat is only 10 miles from Bakersfield.

Lake Ming, which boasts a surface area of 104 acres, was dedicated in 1959 to Kern County Supervisor Floyd Ming. Hills surround the lake, and the Greenhorn Mountains stretch along the eastern horizon. From a hilltop picnic ground overlooking the area, the view is soul-stirring.

Closures: Approximately 35 days a year the lake is closed to the public and reserved for special, organized boating activities. For information on these dates and activities, please contact the Parks and Recreation Division.

Specifically, the assessment indicates that a considerable portion of the SOC mass in the lake has shifted from the pelagic (open water) to the benthic (lake bottom) environments due to quagga mussel growth. Other observations are that benthic (bottom-dwelling) species, such as the endangered Razorback Sucker, may be experiencing increased risk of SOC exposure. In addition, stable isotope analysis (carbon and nitrogen) indicated a decrease in the nutritional value of zooplankton to consumers (e.g., Razorback Sucker larvae) since quagga mussels became established, impacting Razorback health and survival.

Small in size (adult mussels are no larger than an adult's thumbnail), the quagga mussel colonies can grow so close together that they cover the entire bottom of a lake. They block off pipelines and screens for culinary water, sanitation, intakes to power plants and irrigation. The mussels also degrade the water flavor for drinking water facilities, clog up sprinklers at golf courses, impact fisheries, and require extra repairs and maintenance for boat owners. For infested states, the costs to live with quagga is hundreds of millions of dollars per year.

Lake Mead is a large lake on the Colorado River, situated right on the border between Nevada and Arizona in the southwestern USA. The lake is a part of a small natural preserve situated to the east of the Las Vegas urban zone. The total area of the lake is close to 250 square miles and the lake is 120 miles long, with the depth peaking at 532 feet. The lake has got its name after Elwood Mead, a professor and an engineer specializing in building dams. Due to frequent droughts in the area, the lake is a very valuable source of water for the surrounding forest and ecosystem.
