Puli is the soundtrack to the 2010 Telugu action film of the same name, directed by S. J. Suryah and starring Pawan Kalyan. The soundtrack includes six songs composed by A. R. Rahman and lyrics written by Chandrabose. The album was released on 20 August 2010 by Sony Music.[1] The album was released under the film's working title Komaram Puli, with the title of the film being changed to Puli upon release.
The album and background score received positive critical reception upon release. It was nominated for various music awards such as Best Music Director and Best Background Score (Rahman), and Best Female Playback (Shweta Mohan for "Amma Thalle"), but most of the awards in the Best Music Direction and Background Score categories mainly lost to Ye Maaya Chesave, composed by Rahman himself. Shweta Mohan won Best Female Playback for the song "Amma Thalle" in the 2010 Mirchi Music Awards South.
The picturisation of the songs were also noted. Two songs were choreographed by Bollywood choreographer Ahmed Khan. The songs choreographed by him were "Power Star", the introduction song of Pawan Kalyan and "Dochey", the item number featuring Shriya Saran. The songs were filmed in two schedules at Annapurna Studios beginning from 18 May.[4] Out of the six songs, four songs were directly included while the remaining two were background songs.[5] Lyricist Chandrabose collaborated with Rahman for the first time through this film. However, the lyrics penned by him got notably mixed reviews and even his name was not credited in the front CD cover.[6] The lyricist was also criticised for using certain words like "heroin" and "cocaine" in the track "Power Star".[7] He took almost three months to write the song "Amma Thale" while all it took to write the song "Maaralente" was 30 minutes.[5] The original score, composed by Rahman also won critical appreciations. He collaborated with artists from three European countries for re-recording the background score.[5]
The first song in the movie is "Namakame", picturised on Saranya, when she prays at a temple before the birth of her son. The next song, "Maham Maye" is a duet, picturised on Nikeesha Patel, when she tries to grab the attention of Pawan Kalyan. "Amma Thale" comes in close succession and is of the similar theme. Fourth song, "Dochey" is an item number by Shriya Saran, who is a casino dancer in the film. "Power Star", is picturised on Nikeesha and Pawan and it praises the style and hero qualities of Pawan. The last song, "Maaralente", is a background song used throughout the movie, notably during the Puli team formation and the climax scenes.
The soundtrack has also received positive critical reviews. Behindwoods commented that the soundtrack as usual is a great piece from Rahman.[10] A review on NDTV said, "As far as music is concerned, the re-recording is excellent, but the songs are only so good."[11] However, a review by Rediff said, "Rahman's music is not as great as expected except for the song Maaralente which seems touching, fairly powerful and reverberates in the mind even after the film is over."[12]
Singer Suchitra finally bags her first song with ARR and does a neat job, accompanying the ever-dependable Javed Ali. Though the starting beats sound slightly staid, its in the interlude that ARR displays his brilliance with an orchestral string sequence.
Good start!! But unfortunately Telugu people might not be able to understand what Tanvi is singing. People with no knowledge about the language would definitely enjoy the song for its engaging Punjabi-tinged arrangement characterised by the grand beats. Was that Blue the chorus was singing in between?? Vijay is going places these days with the different genres he is experimenting with. Kudos to him!!
instead of ar rahman if devi sri prasad was there puli songs would be the best of all.also chandrabose wrote bad lyrics for puli album.
i expected that puli songs will be the best songs but these songs really disappointed me.
I have a request. I want you guys to comment here after say 10 days from the day you commented here. I am kinda sure you will have a different opinion. Because it happened with me so many times and also with Pulli songs.
Melodies are lost with some crazy Jankar like beats. Need to use telegu singers. It sounds like a slum song with so much of shouting. I guess ARR picked songs here and there and assembled for SJ Surya. Listening to Roja is still sounding great after so many years. May be ARR has lost it or we have no sense of music these days.
Imman- Suseenthiran- Vishal combo comes together after PandiyaNadu while Imman- Suseenthiran combo delivers many hit songs with PandiyaNadu and Jeeva. Credit list of Paayum Puli track list has some enticing set of singers. Let's check-out whether songs of Paayum Puli also exquisite or not.
Marudakaari is traditional Imman's percussion and guitar laden track with the hummable tune and the ear-friendly orchestration with enjoyable violin solo and strings cum percussion section in the first and second interlude respectively. Diwakar's lively vocals and sing along tune props up the tune very much.
Naa Soodana Mogini is also conventional tune which occasionally traces the yesteryear hit songs and the song is strengthened by Jyoti Nooran's rustic, powerful vocals and chorus portions in Telugu verses. Imman's arrangements treads along the rural backgrounds with an extensive use of pipe instruments and percussions peppered with brass sections.
Title song rides on the vocal powerhouse of Malgudi Subha and the Imman mixes grungy angst filled Guitar cum drums combination adorned with extensive Idakka sounds and particularly loved the guitar strums towards the end. Vairamuthu's powerful lurics deserve special mention.
Nowadays Imman started making Bollywood singers to sing Tamil songs and thankfully Tamil diction is not sabotaged in that ventures. Divya Kumarand Shashaa Tripathi joins the list to croon the enjoyable tte--tte kind of interplay between the lead singers. Sharanya Gopinath sings more like a cameo with brief English verses whereas Imman's arrangements also lovely especially violin in the first interlude. Overall although conventional and the package is reminiscent of Imman's previous works, Silukku Marame is an enjoyable ride.
Imman tries to bring back his addictive and simple tune magic with Yaar Indha Muyalkutti and succeeds in clasping the listeners for four-minute duration. Hummable tune with Imman's sweeping and enticing arrangements with clarinet, Piano and vocal harmonies makes this one lovely listen and Vairamuthu's allegorical lyrics with rabbit deserves special mention while Armaan Malik apt vocals makes this one enjoyable ride.

Puli is quite a sombre album from DSP, belted with some drum-heavy songs which do not pump up the excitement present in his earlier associations with Vijay. Vairamuthu's lyrics and Yaendi Yaendi stand out from this OST which will surely get going with the visuals.
Sahithi who is famous for his folk songs has written this song. His lyrics are a major asset to the song. He has come up with proper telangana words to match the song tempo without ruining the original song at any point.
And this time thaman used various kinds of drums especially folk ones to showcase the culture and the tradition of the song i.e. being carried through years. And this has actually enhanced the energy of the song.
And Natty (T. Natarajan Subrmanian) has used the complete setup with the help of choreographer Sekhar.V.J. capturing each and every detail possible to give audience the real festival feel on the screen.
With the new found telugu folk singer Rahul Sipligunj holding the mic once again for this song, its all set to take audience for a folk ride bringing everyone on to the dance floor. Fans go merry in theaters from April 5th as the film is all set to release.
