A sleek, cosmopolitan album, The Lexicon of Love married the opposite styles of post-punk and disco, melding the newest in electronics and synthesizers with a lush, timeless orchestral bent. Writing and working together as a band, singer Martin Fry, keyboardist/guitarist Mark White, saxophonist Stephen Singleton and drummer David Palmer (plus bassist Martin Lickley and original drummer David Robinson, who played on parts of the album including the original version of debut single "Tears Are Not Enough") were brilliantly augmented by up-and-coming producer Trevor Horn and a cast of technical/artistic wizards that included engineer Gary Langan, programmer J.J. Jeczalik and orchestrator Anne Dudley. (A year later, Horn would found the pioneering U.K. label ZTT, and one of their earliest signees was The Art of Noise, an innovative dance collective featuring all four of those creatives behind Lexicon plus journalist Paul Morley.)

In the San Fernando Valley in 1977, teenage busboy Eddie Adams (Mark Wahlberg) gets discovered by porn director Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds), who transforms him into adult-film sensation Dirk Diggler. Brought into a supportive circle of friends, including fellow actors Amber Waves (Julianne Moore), Rollergirl (Heather Graham) and Reed Rothchild (John C. Reilly), Dirk fulfills all his ambitions, but a toxic combination of drugs and egotism threatens to take him back down.
Before he became an era-defining juggernaut later in the '80s with Flashdance and Fatal Attraction, British director Adrian Lyne made his big screen debut in the dying days of disco with Foxes, the fourth of five theatrical productions from Casablanca Filmworks. The movie production offshoot of the popular disco label Casablanca Records, the company had shown an odd affinity for recruiting UK directors for its films (Peter Yates for The Deep, Alan Parker for Midnight Express), with heavy hitters from the company's album branch like Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder recruited for their soundtracks (resulting in an Oscar for the latter film). For this one, both Donna and Giorgio came on board to supply a hit theme song, "On the Radio," which also became the title of Donna's big greatest hits release the same year.

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls fue comercializada en dos discos en una edición especial en DVD el 13 de junio de 2006, si bien la misma está actualmente fuera de circulación. Fox volvió a ponerla en el mercado el 4 de mayo de 2010 en el segundo disco de la edición de cuatro DVDs Studio Classics: Set 9, el cual incluye también las películas Valley of the Dolls, All About Eve (1950) y The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958).
Segna il ritorno della band al sound industrial metal degli esordi, dopo l'esperienza glam rock del precedente Mechanical Animals. Si tratta del primo disco pubblicato dalla band dopo il massacro della Columbine High School, e per questo Holy Wood fu una risposta alle accuse mosse contro Manson e la sua band a quel proposito. Il frontman del gruppo infatti, definì il disco come una dichiarazione di guerra[7].
Si tratta di un'opera rock realizzata come concept album e rappresenta il terzo ed ultimo atto della trilogia iniziata quattro anni prima con il disco Antichrist Superstar e proseguita nel 1998 con Mechanical Animals. Dopo la sua pubblicazione, Manson rivelò che la storia raccontata nella trilogia si svolge in ordine anticronologico; pertanto, Holy Wood inizia la storia, Mechanical Animals la continua e Antichrist Superstar la termina[8]. Il disco è stato scritto a Hollywood, in quella che ai tempi era la casa del cantante, e registrato in diversi posti "non rivelati", tra cui la Death Valley e Laurel Canyon.
Al momento dell'uscita, Holy Wood ricevette critiche positive e altre critiche che accusavano il disco di essere molto ambizioso, ma male eseguito. Inizialmente l'album non ebbe il successo commerciale dei due precedenti lavori della band, tant'è che impiegò tre anni prima di essere certificato disco d'oro dalla RIAA. Ciononostante, con oltre 9 milioni di copie vendute in tutto il mondo fino al 2011, è riuscito a diventare uno dei maggiori successi commerciali della band. Furono estratti tre singoli dall'album e gli fu affiancato il progetto di un film poi diventato un libro che, però, a giugno 2011 rimane ancora inedito. La band supportò il disco con il controverso Guns, God and Government Tour.
Con questo album i Marilyn Manson adottano un sound diverso da quello che ha caratterizzato l'album precedente Mechanical Animals per tornare ai suoni cupi di Antichrist Superstar, pur senza rinunciare a influenze glam rock e pop. Si tratta dell'ultimo disco della band che vede in studio la partecipazione di Twiggy Ramirez, sostituito dopo il tour promozionale da Tim Sköld e tornato nel gruppo solo nel 2008. All'epoca della pubblicazione, nei primi sei mesi Holy Wood vendette 2 milioni di copie in tutto il mondo.
Durante le interviste precedenti la pubblicazione del disco, Manson affermò che Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) avrebbe dovuto essere il White Album industriale [...] nel senso che è molto sperimentale. Ho suonato molte tastiere, ci siamo scambiati i ruoli, scritto in mezzo al deserto [...] è sperimentale e quando penso sperimentale penso al White Album[9]. L'album dei Rolling Stones del 1969 Let It Bleed è diventato un'altra fonte di ispirazione musicale e testuale, in parte a causa della sua connessione con la tragedia dell'Altamont Free Concert[36]. A seguito di ciò, Manson sottolineò nelle sue interviste che Let It Bleed fu scritto nella stessa casa in cui lui scrisse Holy Wood[36].
L'artwork dell'album è stato concepito da P.R. Brown e Marilyn Manson[51]. Manson iniziò a concettualizzarlo già quando cominciò a scrivere le canzoni del disco, e sia Brown che Manson lavorarono in tandem per realizzare le grafiche appena decisero che piuttosto che far fare il lavoro a un fotografo o a un outsider, impareremo a farlo noi stessi[51]. Contiene molti elementi dell'alchimia e dei tarocchi[51].
Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) è stato commercializzato in tre formati fisici. La custodia CD standard contiene un solo disco interattivo, un particolare libretto pieghevole e uno "slipcase" esterno in cartoncino. La versione limitata del Regno Unito contiene come bonus track la versione acustica di The Nobodies mentre la versione limitata giapponese contiene la bonus track inglese e anche una versione live del brano Mechanical Animals. Universal Music Japan distribuì una versione originale rimasterizzata del disco il 3 dicembre 2008 in Super High Material CD, e una versione limitata celebrativa nel 2010 per il decimo compleanno dell'album. La versione LP in vinile fu stampata su due dischi neri, contenuti in una custodia pieghevole in cartoncino. La versione in musicassetta contiene una sola cassetta, un libretto pieghevole e uno "slipcase" esterno in cartoncino. Il portale Amazon.com ha anche in catalogo una versione digitale dell'album in formato MP3 dal 14 novembre 2000.
