Dear colleagues,

I would like to draw your attention to a Special Session titled “Continual Learning for Foundation Models”, which we are organizing at the IEEE International Conference on Evolving and Adaptive Intelligent Systems (EAIS 2026), to be held in Pisa, Italy, September 21–23, 2026.
Foundation Models (e.g., large language models, vision-language models, and multimodal architectures) are increasingly deployed in dynamic, real-world settings. However, most existing approaches remain largely static after training. This special session aims to bring together researchers working on continual, adaptive, and lifelong learning methods for foundation models, addressing challenges such as distribution shift, efficiency, evaluation protocols, and real-world applications.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
  • Continual learning methods for foundation models

  • Benchmarks, metrics, and evaluation protocols

  • Efficient adaptation and updating strategies

  • Multimodal and large-scale continual learning

  • Applications in robotics, reinforcement learning, and adaptive systems

Submissions follow the main IEEE EAIS 2026 Call for Papers and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. Submitted papers should not exceed 8 pages plus at most 2 pages over-length.

Important dates:

    • Paper Submission: March 15, 2026

    • Notification of acceptance: May 15, 2026

    • Camera Ready Submissions: June 15, 2026

    • Author Registration: June 30, 2026

    • Conference Dates: 21-23 September 2026

    Special Session Organizers:
    • Luigi Quarantiello, University of Pisa

    • Irene Testa, University of Pisa

    • Vincenzo Lomonaco, Associate Professor, LUISS

More details about the special session are available here.

We would be delighted if you or your group members considered submitting your work, and we would also appreciate it if you could share this call with interested colleagues.

This is way it should be -- continual learning as a major topic area at conferences. (IMHO, with emphasis on the adjective "humble".)
And special kudos to the IEEE. As a member, I've attended numerous IEEE conferences along the way (and had a few papers in some too). One thing the IEEE does well is more application area focused ML oriented conferences -- it is surely that certain application areas, such as ones I've worked in, for example, speech recognition based speech therapy and ICU/CCU monitoring, have an even more pressing need for continual learning algorithm development. So it may be that application focused conferences would be great places to publish work in continual learning.

Just wondering if anyone can point to other conferences that have had special sessions / workshops / seminars on continual learning in the past?

Best,
