Thank you Dan. I agree with you on his colorful paintings vs his more reserved colors. I want to stop painting just from photographs and do some outdoor live painting. I enjoy all your articles very interesting and very helpful
I really appreciate this article. I am struggling to understand composition in abstract art, and now I have some structure to start off with. After reading this, I was able to identify the compositions in my favorite paintings, and to recognize how some artists combine the compositions as well. Thank you!
You can see the photo of the car and some of my favorite paintings from the show below. His compositions (he wrote the book Composition of Outdoor Painting) and his use of warm and cool colors to create a sense of light and depth are fantastic to see in person.
You're right about Edgar Payne. He wants his books to have a touch of tradition, with a classic setting. Well, his painting tells it all, from the murals to his own compositions. All those paintings needs are a good story and a short composition along with it. Mmm.. That's a good idea, isn't it?
"In all of the reproductions of paintings it may also be observed that a broad simple organization of the masses and spaces is evident. Even where there is much detail or variation these do not disturb the bigness of the main designs. All painters of note realize the importance of simplicity in composition; the subordination of detail, consideration for artistic principles and requirements as well as a respect for outdoor form."
