The Department of Defense today released its annual report on "Military and Security Developments Involving the People's Republic of China." The congressionally mandated report serves as an authoritative assessment on military and security developments involving the PRC.
The report describes the PRC's national strategy in the context of an evolving strategic environment, and outlines the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) strategic objectives driving PRC defense policy and military strategy. It also covers key developments of the PLA's military modernization and reform, and provides insights into the PRC's regional and global ambitions.
The report finds that in 2022, the PRC increasingly turned to the PLA as an instrument of statecraft. Throughout the year, the PLA adopted more coercive actions in the Indo-Pacific region, while accelerating its development of capabilities, including its nuclear, space, and cyberspace capabilities; deepening military ties with Russia; and strengthening its ability to project power in the Indo-Pacific region and globally. At the same time, the PRC largely denied, cancelled, and ignored recurring bilateral defense engagements, as well as DoD requests for military-to-military communication at multiple levels.
Explore the most recent data on the drug situation in Europe provided by the EU Member States. These datasets underpin the analysis presented in the agency's work. Most data may be viewed interactively on screen and downloaded in Excel format.
We have developed a systemic approach that brings together the human networks, processes and scientific tools necessary for collecting, analysing and reporting on the many aspects of the European drugs phenomenon.
How many new drugs were detected in Europe over the last year? Is cannabis getting stronger? How many Europeans have ever used an illicit drug? What are the latest drug policy developments in the region? These are just some of the questions explored in the European Drug Report: Trends and developments. This report provides a top-level overview of the long-term drug-related trends and developments at European level, while homing in on emerging problems in specific countries. Such a perspective is valuable, as it allows differing national experiences to be understood within the broader European context.
This version is intended to be read online and contains explanatory notes and live links to resources on the EMCDDA website, giving access to electronic publications and online data in the European Drug Report: Data and statistics, where information on methodology, reporting countries and years to which the data pertain is available.
The Sound Practices on the implications of fintech developments for banks and bank supervisors assesses how technology-driven innovation in financial services, or "fintech", may affect the banking industry and the activities of supervisors in the near to medium term.
Various future potential scenarios are considered, with their specific risks and opportunities. In addition to the banking industry scenarios, three case studies focus on technology developments (big data, distributed ledger technology and cloud computing) and three on fintech business models (innovative payment services, lending platforms and neo-banks).
Against this backdrop, current observations suggest that although the banking industry has undergone multiple innovations in the past, the rapid adoption of enabling technologies and emergence of new business models pose an increasing challenge to incumbent banks in almost all the banking industry scenarios considered.
Building on the supportive feedback, the Committee has further specified the nature and scope of its contribution and has enhanced its 10 key implications and considerations on the following supervisory issues:
