fromwhat i can gather, the Yamaha Series 1 pedals were introduced in 1980, the Korg versions in 1985 (that's the earliest date reference i've found) but i'm not sure about the Pearls... "mid 80s" is as precise a reference as i've found.

i knew youd answer, dude. You know I had the Korg fg-01 back in the day..i know it self oscillates, but know i have me a pearl, Im wondering if I would benefit from a korg or a yamaha, which im guessing are kind of the same.

the thing is, with those 4-knob, 80s flangers they all seem to sound a bit alike and oscillate in a beautiful way. the main differences i've noticed with the ones i have (the Pearl and a few Guyatones) are the ranges of the controls (although it may be possible to finetune this with the trimpots) and the overall sonic character...

the PS-023 (4-knob) has a narrower range of speed than the PS-018, but that could be because it also has vibrato and chorus modes... a really slow sweeping vibrato wouldn't be much use i'd guess, so they made the speed range to suit all three modes;

I think the yamaha is a little different, as a lot of those yamaha, korg, guyatone, locobox, electra, etc. pedals where all the same circuits and Pearl was kind of doing its own thing (not to say that those other pedals where bad, they're actually great!).

I've also heard the FL10MII might be an ADA clone- I've never played an ADA (only heard clips) but I own the FL10MII and from what I can gather, they definitely do share some similarities. For comparison's sake, the Yamaha goes much deeper than the Arion SFL-1 which I have/love (you have one also Seif, if I remember correctly) but the Arion is warmer/more vocal. Both great flangers, would like to try the Pearl as well...

i do have the arion, and its very vocal, and i now have the pearl, which is sicker than i remember 10 years ago. im just debating if i want to get the yamaha, will it get into terrritory the pearl wont. thought, gunner?

Definitely similar to the Yamaha from that clip, although the Yammy can get much more subtle if you want- maybe the Pearl can also, although I couldn't tell from that clip. I use it for old Cure type stuff which it really excells at, and obviously its great for more experimental stuff as well. It might overlap too much w/ the Pearl depending on how you use it, but it's really hard to go wrong w/ any of the old MIJ 80's stuff- sure it would be easy to flip if you needed to...

I have the Yamaha FL10-MII (I have all the Yamaha SDS pedals, bar the phaser) and I'd agree it cover a lot of the same ground of both the Pearl and ADA (never owned that, though). For some reason I never use flangers these days...
