This contemporary still life is the next project we will tackle in my next instructional watercolor dvd. I will talk a lot about colors in your painting and picking the best choices for a harmonious watercolor. Keeping the colors fresh and crisp, so they don't become muddy. Learn the elements of design for a larger still life. Planning, set-up, photographing. Painting soft background shadows. Successfully painting stitched cloth that has the appearance of being quilted. Painting the ever-elegant french drinking glass. Executing reflections in marble. This is a bit more of an advanced dvd, but I will go over the basic set-up information.  Packet comes complete with stretching information, pencil drawing, reference photos and the supply list.
DVD will ship on July 22th.

I am so pleased with this piece. I love the huge graphic element that the cherries play against the neutral gray. They really "Pop". (Upon looking over my blog I find I paint a lot of red's. I didn't realize how often. But they're pretty and possess a lot of "punch".) The crystal bowl in this piece took time. Lots of intricate detail to make the cut-glass real. Artist Girl is very happy today!

Applesauce... or soon to be applesauce! This is my mom's Foley Food Mill that she used to make applesauce. Lots of work, but the best applesauce ever! I love the look of all the old "appliances". Slightly distressed, but that's what gives it character. And, of course, we love the red apple reflections. And, the cast shadow of the strainer on the tabletop. Cool!

What do you do when it's too hot to go to the beach?
It's been close to 100 degrees for the past 7 days. Too hot for me or my Black German Shepherds to go to the beach. So, we have to stay inside and get cabin fever, or... You paint a picture of your favorite spot, and pretend you're there. :-) So the last few days, I've had my favorite radio station on, the WDRV out of Chicago. Been sipping my favorite beverage, Diet Coca-Cola (Caffeine Free). And sitting in the sand at Lake Michigan, under a beautiful sky of cottony clouds. I may stay here forever...:-)

I think you'll notice by the slight slant that this Iris has some attitude. In this very beautiful flirty dress she's ready to take on the town. I put darker blues (cobalts) in the background, and softer shades for the petals.

Sometimes I just can't help myself...
The desire to paint lace and fine china has to be satisfied. So the end result is a very lovely, very feminine painting. A delicate, yet very intricate backdrop for the headliners - red, ripe and juicy strawberries.

Very busy in the studio lately. Finishing up on some commissions. Finished recording my latest dvd, "Pet Portraits". Beings that Christmas time is just around the corner, we all do a lot of Pet Portraits.  A lot of artists have asked me about the process of painting Pet Portraits, both from the artistic side and the business side. Sorry I've been somewhat sporadic in my postings as of late. We've been going through a lot with my GSD, Thorn. I have him going through a new kind of therapy in the hopes of helping with his Degenerative Myelopathy. Hoping and praying that it will help him. I love him so. And during this time I found it really doesn't do him or me any good to sit and mope. So...I'm back. Losing myself in my paintings. My art helps me go to a different place, where things are all roses...or in this case...irises.
Enjoy this piece...I was extremely pleased.

Cheryl completed this still life after studying my "Sterling, Crystal & Glass Instructional Watercolor DVD". It's a beautiful piece. I love the very delicate lace cloth. The way the cherries really "pop" from the page and how she has chosen to put black behind the cherry stems and the top of the crystal bowl to really make it a striking graphic element.

Cheryl has a great style all her own. People use my dvd's for technique and then add their own twist. Keep up the great painting Cheryl!! Cheryl is from Texas. She doesn't have a blog of her own yet, but maybe soon, to share her great work with everyone...♥

The boys (my German Shepherds) and I were walking at Notre Dame last week, around the lakes. It was late in the day and there were two Swans in the water soaking in all that sunshine. They were beautiful. Their feathers absorbing all of the soft sunset colors around them. ~~ Then we high-tailed it out of there before they came on shore and chased us down like they usually do. YIKES! Yes they are beautiful, but boy are they mean.

Have you noticed that I love doing glass? Went with a nice complimentary blue for the background. A Cobalt and Lamp Black mix. For the Peach Lily I wanted to 'up the brilliance factor' by mixing a touch of Opera with the Gamboge. It adds just a bit more zip!

I wanted to pay special attention to these grapes to keep their powdery white film (bloom) in place. As well as giving them an inner glow and plumpness. Those leaves really caught some nice backlight too! Hope you like them....:-)

It's fun playing with the backgrounds...this one used a nice gradation from black, to a touch of black mixed with some of the Quins used for the Rose itself. Tying the entire piece together.

Just wanted to give you a quick update on my Thorn, as people have asked how he is doing with his Degenerative Myelopathy. We spent a day last weekend building a ramp to make it easier for him to go inside and outside. It's the best ramp ever! Extremely sturdy with plush carpeting so he won't slip. The boys are used to doing agility training, so this idea of "walking up a ramp" was pretty easy to adjust to...for both of them. Brier loves it too. It's a lots of fun. Brier tends to live his bun-bun men (stuffed animals) sitting on the ramp, but I watch over it all to make sure the ramp doesn't get too crowded. :-) Getting the ramp done was a huge step in case he needs to go into a cart to help him get around. I can see the decline in my sweet Thorn, which is very difficult. He's such a good boy. The odd thing is he seems almost unaffected by the DM when he's running. But when he's walking slow, he stumbles, his back feet cross and sometimes he falls. But, we're still walking everyday and going to the beach when we can.

Doing a late season watercolor of some late season Petunias. This was a chance to enjoy the natural "effects" of watercolor, with the shadows areas on the white flowers. We (the Petunias and I) are enjoying this beautiful weather for October here in the Midwest. 70's and sunny...can't beat it! Maybe a lake day is in our future....:-) (The boys and I, not the Petunias...lol)

I found these Bee Balm blossoms at my county park. They are another fall flower. So pretty and delicate with all of the tiny shoots and even tinier shoots above that. A nice touch of wild flower color this late in the season.

You're probably asking why Brier is there...because we travel as a unit, the three of us. And I think Thorn feels better with his brother by his side. ♥

Another one of the wild flowers from St. Patricks' County Park. I have always admired the wispy seed pods but have never painted them. The little seeds are light as a feather, as they catch the brisk fall winds and get carried off to their new homes. This is a bit different then my usual...hope you like it.

Another installation in my Wild Flower paintings. This one was fun to design from the graphic point of view. With the limited number of Reeds I wanted to include, I wanted an interesting intertwining so there were cool cast shadows. I have one more Wild Flower painting in mind, but I'm not sure if the heavy rains we're getting today and tomorrow might ruin that idea...stay tuned.

The reference for this photo came from our trip to Lake Michigan a couple of weeks ago. Still very nice weather. Unusually nice for October in the Midwest. The sunset was quite spectacular. A nice low cloud bank allowed for intense colors. We enjoyed that day immensely!

I loved this Butterfly, sitting on her throne of flowers. I'm not sure of the variety of flower, but I'm leaning toward some type of Phlox. Because of all the intricacies of both the flower and her majesty, Ms. Butterfly, this piece took forever. But it is complete and Watercolor Girl is quite pleased...:-)

This oil painting is on Cradled Hardboard, so it doesn't require framing. I loved getting into the heart of the Rose. This one is on the "Cabbage Rose" side, very bulbous. Similar to those of the Victorian era.

The dvd that would best be suited for painting an oil would either be "Iris in Glass" or "Tulips in Red Vase". Both offer indepth instruction on flowers in oil.

For the Strawberry I went with mostly Poppy and Gamboge to bring out the bright red, ripe color. I liked the drama of this piece. The very dark background accenting the stem and really making the Strawberry "pop". Love those dark backgrounds.

I've really been loving the backgrounds on the last couple of pieces. Working on the dark and dramatic with that "glow". That hint of a color that are very faint, but add so much. (I work with glaze upon glaze upon glaze to achieve that effect.) The flowers are so enhanced by these backgrounds...it makes my very dramatic Orchid even more lush. Enjoy!
