State law provides that persons convicted of two or more traffic offenses within a 12-month period may be required to complete a BMV-approved Driver Safety Program (DSP). Individuals under 21 years of age are required to complete a DSP if, they are convicted of two or more traffic offenses. When the BMV is notified of these convictions, a DSP course must be completed within 90 days or driving privileges will be suspended. Notification of this requirement is mailed from the BMV. A court may also require an individual to complete a DSP course and use this requirement as an alternative to suspension of driving privileges; however, the court order may not specifically require participation in a BMV-approved DSP.

Any Indiana driver can take a DSP course. The BMV will apply a 4 point credit to an Indiana Official Driver Record for successful completion of a BMV-approved DSP. The credit may only be applied once every three years. However, if an additional course is completed, the time period of the credit will be extended for three years from the new course completion date.

The BMV has approved a variety of programs. The DSP curriculum is available in a classroom, DVD or online format. All of the providers have the same curriculum standards and all courses are a minimum of four hours in duration. The DSP courses do not teach an individual how to drive, but rather the courses provide information that will help improve defensive driving skills. The maximum cost for any of the BMV-approved DSP courses is $55. All drivers taking a DSP must pay any fees associated with the course. Allow 7 to 10 business days for completion results to be processed.

The NYSDMV has approved the sponsoring agencies listed below to provide accident prevention courses that reduce points and insurance premiums. The courses include traditional classroom courses and courses delivered through the Internet or another alternate delivery method. Contact any of these course providers to get information about a course in your area and to determine the course fee.

After you've completed an 8-hour collision prevention course, you'll be issued a completion certificate. Contact your insurance company to get instructions on how to submit the certificate and find out what your insurance rate reduction will be.

The Driver Improvement Program is a classroom course provided by approved New Jersey-licensed providers throughout the State. You will have received a notice in the mail from the MVC giving you the option to take this course*. This program is offered in lieu of a 30-day suspension for drivers who accumulate 12 to 14 points in more than two years. More detailed information about the program is included in the Notice of Scheduled Suspension that you receive in the mail. Up to three points will be removed from your driving record if you successfully complete the program. A $75 administrative fee payable to the MVC is required prior to scheduling a class with a New Jersey-licensed provider. Drivers will be required to pay an additional training fee to the provider for the classroom instruction.

Drivers that are issued a driver's license permit for the first time are probationary drivers and will have to serve a two-year probationary period. While in the probationary period, drivers who are convicted of two or more moving violations with a total of four or more points, will receive a Fee Due notice to pay for and enroll in the Probationary Driver Program to correct improper or dangerous driving practices. This program is a four-hour classroom program provided by approved New Jersey-licensed providers throughout the state. The defensive driving course is a voluntary course. If you received a notice in the mail from the MVC giving you an option to take a Driver Improvement Program, or a notice to take the Probationary Driver Program, please read above content under Remedial Driver Programs for details.

Normal physical changes are part of the aging process. Mature drivers may experience declines in vision, hearing, reaction time and flexibility. They can continue to drive safely by learning to compensate for these changes.

DMV-approved mature operator's safety courses help drivers understand how aging affects driving abilities. A driver may be required to take one of these mature operator's safety courses as a result of a traffic infraction.

Drivers who successfully complete a mature operator safety course may qualify for reduced motor vehicle insurance premiums. Drivers should contact their automobile insurance company to find out whether or not they would be eligible for a discount after completing the course.

Whether you are learning to drive a car or motorcycle or are getting your commercial driver license (CDL), the Colorado DMV has you covered with our Driver Education webpage. When you satisfactorily complete a driver improvement clinic, you'll learn defensive driving techniques that can help you avoid and prevent crashes. These eight-hour classroom sessions cost no more than $100 and are offered at sites around the state and as an online course on the Internet. Contact the court to be sure it will accept a computer-based course. Also, if you are under age 20, you may enroll in a clinic that provides online or classroom instruction.

If DMV requires you to attend a clinic, you must complete the entire eight-hour course. If you fail to satisfactorily complete the clinic within 90 days, your driving privilege will be suspended until you meet this requirement. If you are attending college outside of Virginia or you are a member of the military or a military dependent and stationed outside of Virginia, you may be eligible for an extension of the 90-day requirement. The extension will be granted only if you are in an area where no approved clinics are offered. The extension will last until a break in your schedule.

You may be awarded 5 safe driving points, once every 24 months, after you successfully complete a driver improvement clinic. The highest safe driving point balance you may accumulate on your driving record is 5 points. If a court requires you to complete a clinic, the court determines if you will be awarded safe driving points.

If you hold a commercial driver's license (CDL) or committed an offense while operating a commercial motor vehicle, and you are required to attend a driver improvement clinic, you must satisfactorily complete a commercial driver improvement clinic designed specifically for commercial drivers.

Insurance companies may offer premium discounts to policyholders 55 and older who complete an accident prevention course for mature drivers. Check with your agent to see if your insurance company offers this benefit.

If you take a driver improvement clinic to reduce your insurance premium, you will not be eligible to receive safe driving points. If a court assigns you to complete a clinic, you will not be eligible to receive the insurance premium reduction.
