Intermec makes software LabelShop Pro Net 6 that helps you by making an itf file that you upload to standard text via SO10. The software is pretty wysywig but does require that you define fields BUT it goes pretty fast from there. It can also include a qty field so you can control how many lables are required. The standard text is then called in your MAIN window that you need to size to your actual label dimensions. Its all pretty smooth once you do your first label. It does not require additional firmware or pseudo printers like other solutions and is fairly inexpensive solution. Also Intermec has excellent support.

If your BASIS staff define the printer as a Intermec device and=
use an SAP driver, it may be possible to simplify this process -=
maybe NOT have to understand the progamming langauge by using a=
form tool or SAP script?
Please find below the sapscript code I have developed to print labels on
the Intermec 3400e. The first section of Intermec codes defines the design
the label and the position of field values. Please refer to the programming
manual of the intermec if you need to understand the meaning of each code.
Couple of weeks ago, I designed a lable for the Intermec 3400e and used a
sapscript layout set in R3 40b. I do not know smartform at all and this
might not be solving your problem but it might lead you in the right
direction.
