Diagnosis
I ran mscore in the terminal and observed the output. It logged something along the lines of "Error: MS Basic soundfont not found" (cannot recall exact wording). Turns out that the /usr/share/mscore-4.1 folder was missing a sound/ directory which usually should contain the soundfont required to play back any notes.

Just wanted to post this solution here; it seems like something might have gone wrong on one of the MuseScore updates, since the playback did work previously. Maybe an update deleted the sound directory?

I don't think we really need to update the archwiki because the problem will be resolved pretty soon. Whenever the packager has time to re-compile it.
I posted the solution here and on the musescore forums thought, as a temporary workaround. Anybody who has the problem and googles it should be able to find the posts.

I was under the impression that MuseScore couldn't use the same sound libraries as Sibelius or Finale.. I could be wrong though! I just updated to version 3 and it seems like lots of things are better..

I just checked out the website and it looks like things are still the same.. MuseScore 3 still uses things called 'soundfonts' rather than VSTs. They have a list of free ones available for download here. I haven't really found much to like about the soundfonts that are available, so I actually export a MIDI file from MuseScore into another program to use a better sound library.

Certainly there are better-sounding sound libraries than the ones MuseScore is compatible with. I just meant that you can download other options ('soundfonts') that will work inside the program itself, rather than needing to export to a different program. Often a lot of subtleties in the score do not translate from program to program, at least in my experience. It would be great -- scratch that, amazing -- if I could use my orchestral sound library straight through MuseScore, but sadly it's just not possible, forcing me (and probably many others) to do a lot more legwork to get a decent rendering ?

Found one thing I strongly dislike about using soundfonts with MS: everything defaults to steinway grandeur for channel 1 and perc for the other channels. Thus, you have to open their and set things correctly!!!

How do i install sounfonts in Sibelius 8.6.2?
Posted by MusicalHippo - 16 Dec 09:19PM Hide picture The question is self explanatory. I could not find the answer on google or on these forums. I would also like to know where I could download decent soundfonts for Piano and if I can use the same soundfonts that I used in MuseScore 2 in Sibelius. Also, how do I set the soundfonts in Sibelius?

Thank you in advance for replying. Back to top Allthreads Re: How do i install sounfonts in Sibelius 8.6.2?
Posted by Laurence Payne - 16 Dec 10:57PM Hide picture Sibelius doesn't directly support Soundfonts. But as an owner of Sibelius 8.6.2 you're entitled to download and install Sibelius 7 Sounds. Nothing is perfect, but I think you'll find they compare very well to the Soundfonts used by MuseScore. Back to top Allthreads Re: How do i install sounfonts in Sibelius 8.6.2?
Posted by Bob Porter - 17 Dec 02:21AM Hide picture I have both Sibelius and MuseScore, and don't use the fonts that come with MuseScore (in it). I think you really want to use Sib 7 sounds, especially since you are paying for them. Back to top Allthreads Re: How do i install sounfonts in Sibelius 8.6.2?
Posted by Patrick O'Keefe - 17 Dec 08:52PM Hide picture I agree with those that say "Install Sibelius 7 Sounds" but that obviously does not answer your question if you have reason for wanting for specifically wanting soundfonts.

I recommend search the web some more. In the past there have been techniques described there. Here's one:

There are several others postings as well..

Back when that thread was written there may not have been any 64 bit Sfz players but Plogue now has one:

I haven't tried any of this so I can give no advice. Try it and let us know how it works.

Posted by Robin Walker - 17 Dec 09:44PM Hide picture Plogue Sforzando is a free VST which takes .sf2 soundfont files (amongst other formats), converts a copy of them into .sfz format, and then plays the resulting .sfz files. It uses the same ARIA Engine as ARIA Player.

Your use may vary but I recently moved over to Linux and cannot use any VSTs or computer based DAW for the time being. I have actually found Musescore to be more productive. I am no longer just fiddling with all the virtual instruments and just focusing on the composition.
