Hello Philadelphia Contact Improvisation community,

Contact Improvisation dancing returns to our Sunday evening jam time, but this week it is not exactly the usual format.

Instead of a jam with a led warm-up and open dancing, Loren will be verbally leading an Underscore. This will feel like a jam, but with more facilitation from solo warm-up into connecting with others, but still transitioning to open dancing. We will still have the opening and closing circles. It is helpful to come on time and stay the whole time.

Facilitated Underscore with Live Talk
Sunday, October 22 5:00-7:00pm
Mascher Space Cooperative in Headlong Rear Studio, 1170 S. Broad St. (near Broad/Federal SEPTA stop)
Facilitated by Loren Groenendaal with support from Jenny Sawyer
Donation $5-20 to be paid in cash, Venmo or Paypal at the event

RSVP by emailing LorenTeach...@gmail.com or LorenGro...@gmail.com
Capacity is 15, first come first serve.
I will post on the Ci Philly listserv and the Facebook event if we have moved into a waiting list.

Doors open at 4:50. Please arrive, change, and be ready to go shortly after 5:00, when we gather for an opening circle and then transition to a guided warm-up into more open dancing.

The Underscore is a framework designed by Nancy Stark Smith to create ideal conditions for open dancing with contact improvisation, solo, and ensemble dancing, aka the best jam ever! The Underscore practice is usually done nonverbally and is not very actively facilitated in the moment. This event WILL be actively verbally facilitated by Loren Groenendaal, so it will feel somewhere in between an Underscore, jam, and class. Usually to be prepared to engage in the Underscore, participants attend a Talk Through in advance to learn the phases of the Underscore to write down their names and symbols and ask questions.
Instead, the verbal facilitation will guide us through the phases of the Underscore in real time, and demonstrate multiple possibilities for warming up our bodies, engaging in touch, and approaching non-touching duet and ensemble work.

For those interested in a jam experience, you will get that and learn about the Underscore simultaneously. It will be an in depth warm-up with multiple options that will open up into open dancing.

For those interested in teaching and facilitating Contact and Compositional Improvisation, it is also an opportunity to learn some new methods and terminology for contact improvisation and compositional improvisation warm-ups, terms, physical and aesthetic structures.

For those interested in doing the Underscore, you will get that, but there will be more words, which should be nice reminders of ways to engage, thus deepening your practice.

For those interested in an Underscore Talk Through to prepare you for subsequent Underscore practices (dates in Nov & Dec 2023 and beyond), this
Facilitated Underscore with Live Talk Through counts as a Talk Through if you stay late to write down the glyphs if it is your first talk through.

To complete the Talk Through, you should stay at least few minutes to do a little writing/drawing and talking. So, please bring something to write with and on. If there are multiple newcomers who want a full Talk Through, we may go have dinner at a local restaurant in order to complete the talk through and satiate our appetite simultaneously.

So if you are interested in the complete Talk Through, please email
LorenTeach...@gmail.com or LorenGro...@gmail.com to let me know specifically that and if you have any dietary restrictions, so I can plan accordingly.

Underscore facilitator Loren Groenendaal (they/she) is a dancer, improviser, choreographer, curator, creative and somatic movement educator, and has been active in Philadelphia since 2003. She has been facilitating the Underscore in Philadelphia since 2013 and has studied with Underscore developer Nancy Stark Smith several times including a 3-week course investigating the Underscore. She is most interested in creating structures that allow for freedom. They desire more connection and adaptation between people and build opportunities for people to collaborate and create. She particularly values dance and music improvisation because they highlight liveness of humans and the fleetingness of everything. They have co-founded many organizations and events in support of improvisation in Philadelphia including: the Mascher Space Cooperative in 2005, the Thursday Contact Improvisation Jam in 2011, the H-O-T Series of Philadelphia in 2013, the Impermanent Society of Philadelphia in 2015, and the Dissolving Doors Festival in 2019. She holds a CMA in Laban Movement Analysis and Bartenieff Fundamentals from the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies, an MFA in Choreography from University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a BA in Dance and Visual Art from Oberlin College. She is the artistic director for Vervet Dance.

WHAT IS THE UNDERSCORE?

The Underscore Practice is a simple and beautiful structure for a focused jam-like practice developed by Nancy Stark Smith. The structure is a precise, but open platform for investigation of contact improvisation and solo and group improvised composition. The score is an organic developmental nonverbal sequence that provides focus to the dancing community and opens up possibilities for movement, awareness, connection, and various physical/mental states. We (do our best to) commit to participating in the entire score (which includes resting, eating, digesting, observing, bonding with the earth).

Nancy Stark Smith, who originated the practice, describes it this way: "The Underscore is a vehicle for incorporating Contact Improvisation into a broader arena of improvisational dance practice; for developing greater ease dancing in spherical space—alone and with others; and for integrating kinesthetic and compositional concerns while improvising. It allows for a full spectrum of energetic and physical expressions, embodying a range of forms and changing states. Its practice is familiar yet unpredictable." UNDERSCORE TALK THROUGH INFORMATION:

WHAT: Underscore Talk Through

WHEN: Thursday, November, 5:415-6:15pm

WHERE: ZOOM, REGISTER to get connection info:
https://muhlenberg.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJYrfuurrjMsHNJtR5HreiV0UQGu5M1vHSx-

WHY: A prior Talk Through is required to participate in the Underscore. The Underscore Talk Through outlines the structure of the Underscore Practice, so that participants are all practicing together and nonverbally. The Talk Through also provides a common language and glyphs (symbols) to use when reflecting on our practice in the concluding Thanksgiving and Harvest. If you have not participated in an Underscore Talk Through before, you should attend. The Talk Through introduces you to the structure, so we can nonverbally follow the dancing journey together.

COST: Sliding scale $0-15 with no one turned away due to lack of funds. Payments may be made via Paypal to LorenGro...@gmail.com or via Venmo @Loren-Groenendaal, or cash. Cash or eventbrite is preferred.

NOTE: Please bring something to write with and on to this meeting.

UNDERSCORE PROTOCOL:

The Underscore is a carefully held container and an intentional space. This is NOT a come and go jam. We aim to commit to the entire practice together. Those who Arrive at 2:30pm and come to the Assembly shortly thereafter will stay through the conclusion by 4:30pm as it is customary to commit to the full session for an Underscore Practice. Doors open at 2:15 for arriving.

YOU MUST REGISTER by emailing LorenGro...@gmail.comCapacity is 15, first come first serve. I will post on the Ci Philly listserv if we have moved into a waiting list.

A prior UNDERSCORE TALK THROUGH is required to participate in the Underscore. More about this below.

Street shoes and Food are NOT permitted in the dance studios. If you need to wear shoes to dance, they should be soft soled, clean, and not worn outside. You may snack in the lounge or outside.

I recommend bringing a water bottle, snacks, something to write on, and something to write with.

HEALTH /COMMUNITY CARE PROTOCOL:

Capacity is limited to 15 people.

I strongly encourage you to wash your hands once you arrive to the building and after the Underscore before you leave.

Masks are required. (Participants may briefly unmask to drink water if 6 feet or more away from others. There is an outdoor courtyard that will allow for even more space.)

Touch with consent is permitted.

I am prepared to do contact tracing. If a participant discovers within 7 days after the Underscore that they are positive for covid, monkeypox or another infectious disease that could have transmission in the Underscore setting, please email lorenteach...@gmail.com and we will let the rest of the group know about their possible exposure.

Since September 2022, Covid-19 Vaccination is encouraged, but not required.

I strongly encourage all participants to wear clean garments with long sleeves and pants for minimal skin exposure.

Do NOT attend the Underscore if you have symptoms of COVID, have tested positive for COVID or have a known or possible COVID exposure in the last 10 days, UNLESS you have tested negative at least 5 days after exposure.

Do NOT attend the jam if you have symptoms of Monkeypox Virus (flu, fever, swollen lymph nodes, new skin rash), a current case of MPV, or a known exposure to MonkeyPox in the past 2 weeks.

Its practice is familiar yet unpredictable." SPECIAL GUEST LIVE MUSICIAN:

Jenifer Gelineau is from Holyoke, Massachusetts and is a Feeding Tube Records artist, music educator, and mother who currently lives in Greenfield, MA. Violin is her primary instrument however Jenifer often includes viola, vocals, electronics, music box compositions, wood, field recordings, and electronics into her improvisational work. She develops multi-layered rhythmic textures that are sampled and layered into collages and dreamlike soundscapes. As Byron Coley writes, this practice can create “an eternal quality to her signature solo bow work, which makes her melodic inventions sound traditional and freaked-out at the same time. The combination is both exquisite and transportational.” You can listen to her most recent recorded solo work at https://feedingtuberecords.com/releases/quarantunes-series-no-011/

Its practice is familiar yet unpredictable." More info: http://nancystarksmith.com/underscore

UNDERSCORE PROTOCOL:

The Underscore is a carefully held container and an intentional space. This is NOT a come and go jam. We aim to commit to the entire practice together. Those who Arrive at 2:00pm and come to the Assembly shortly thereafter will stay through the conclusion by 4:00pm as it is customary to commit to the full session for an Underscore Practice. Doors open at 1:45 for arriving.

YOU MUST REGISTER by emailing LorenGro...@gmail.com or lorenteach...@gmail.comCapacity is 15, first come first serve.

Masking is now OPTIONAL.

FACILITATOR BIO:
They have co-founded many organizations and events in support of improvisation in Philadelphia including: the Mascher Space Cooperative in 2005, the Thursday Contact Improvisation Jam in 2011, the H-O-T Series of Philadelphia in 2013, the Impermanent Society of Philadelphia in 2015, the Dissolving Doors Festival in 2019, and Free Float by Free Fleet starting in 2023.
