Kayliani is a white, femme dance artist from Saint Peters, Missouri, currently based in Philadelphia. Their multidisciplinary work spans movement, songwriting and visual arts to articulate rich, personal narratives of neurodivergence and femmehood. Sood is a passionate teacher— whose practice ranges from the realm of early childhood to adult dance education. They hold a BFA in Dance from the University of the Arts, and have performed with Chloe Marie, Curt Haworth, Vincent Johnson, among others. Sood’s recent choreographic works have featured in the 20/92 film festival, Cannonball Festival, Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and Philadelphia Dance Projects’ DANCE UP CLOSE series."

"Intuitive Embodiment"

This class is an invitation to move through improvisational frameworks that empower choice-making.  We will use foundational physical mechanisms like pressure, suspension, and proximity as winding, rambling paths that illuminate possibility. This is a class about (re)connecting with an improvisational body and its living intuitions. Soloistic, partnered, and ensemble modalities cultivate an expansive approach and provide structure for a deepened sense of artistic embodiment. This is a consent-based practice. Contact between students will be proposed, but is not necessary to participate.

Wednesday Night Dance

Improvisation Performance Practice

 with Loren Groenendaal

Wednesday January 28st, 6:30-8:30pm

at Headlong/Mascher Space, 1170 S. Broad St. Philadelphia, PA 19146

The class will focus on composing improvisationally, collectively, and transparently. Our making of our making will be part of our making. If you are familiar with Tuning Scores initiated by Lisa Nelson, we will be engaging in similar practices of giving and receiving instruction as part of the art, but Loren has a new twist- a focus on words that start with the letters "re". I have not done this practice with a group yet, but I am calling it, "Rendering."  This "Rendering" is an improvisational composition for performance exploring the many meanings of this one word, render - to repeat, to give back, to return, to restore, to reduce, and to represent, supported by its related "re" words and actions. The performance is made and remade through repetition, reaction, re-creation (recreation), reflection, recursion, and renovation. There is a reformation of form as motifs are reconsidered, reanimated, and reintegrated. Sometimes, a theme is reduced or replaced and other times, restored and reproduced. This class will be referencing and expanding on Loren's years of research on themes of repetition and theme and variation in improvisation and choreography, but with some freshness re-animating this process.

Loren (they/she) is a dancer, improviser, choreographer, and educator. Loren focuses her curatorial energy on live improvisational music and dance events with Free Fleet and Semi-Composed through Vervet Dance and has been involved with The H-O-T Series, Impermanent Society of Philadelphia, and Dissolving Doors. Loren holds a BA in Dance from Oberlin College where she trained in choreography and improvisation with Ann Cooper Albright and Nusha Martynuk and an MFA in Choreography from UNC Greensboro where she included improvisation in her studies and thesis advised by John Gamble. Loren is also a Certified Movement Analyst in Laban/Bartenieff Movement Studies. Loren has taught improvisation at Muhlenberg College, UNC Greensboro, through Mural Arts, and as a special guest at Juniata College, Temple University, Towson University, and the former University of the Arts. Loren currently teaches at Rowan University, at Cardell Dance Studio, and in rotation for Contact Improv Philly and this Wednesday Night Improvisation Performance Practice series. http://www.vervetdance.org/more-about-loren-groenendaal.php
