Stony Brook University's license with Microsoft gives active students* and active west campus employees** rights to use the software, this includes 1) license, 2) media, and 3) software activation/keys. ATTENTION: You must be an active student - enrolled in at least one class - in order to be eligible to use Microsoft Office. Staff and Faculty must be active employees.
If you're a student, teacher or faculty member with an active school email address, you're likely eligible to get access to Office 365 for free through Microsoft, with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Teams, plus other classroom tools.
You might be saying, "Wait a minute, if I can get all of those apps for free, why pay for Microsoft 365 in the first place?" The functionality of the free apps is limited, so they only run in your web browser and you can only use them while you're actively connected to the internet. They also have fewer features than the full Microsoft 365 versions.

The software will check in automatically to make sure you are still an active Brown faculty/staff member. To keep your licenses active, you need to connect at least one Office application (Excel, Word, etc.) to the Internet at least once every 30 days on every computer or device. All active University staff and students are entitled to download, install and activate up to 5 copies of the standalone Microsoft Office software on personal computers or mobile devices for the duration of their time at the University.
NOTE: Office 365 accounts will be deleted 30 days after a user loses active faculty, staff, or student affiliation with Weber State. Any data that had been stored in the account will be deleted.

Students are licensed for Microsoft 365 Apps as soon as they are matriculated and remain licensed as long as they are active students. Following graduation or withdrawal from the University, the license will be removed, converting the applications to read-only mode. Former students will have the option to purchase licensing directly through Microsoft to restore functionality.
