Hello everyone,

We just released Consul 1.4.0 that includes a completely revamped ACL system and Multi-datacenter support for Connect in the Enterprise version.

We released 1.4.0-rc1 in October and are thankful to all of you who tried it out and gave us valuable feedback on the ACL changes and migration process.

This release also marks the Consul Connect feature’s General Availability. We've stabilized and built on the core that was released as Beta in June this year with a few changes based on Beta feedback. Connect's core functionality is now ready to have the Beta tag removed, however we are far from finished and have many more features and tooling planned to make it more powerful and easier to setup in production.

New ACL System

The ACL system has been redesigned while allowing for in-place upgrades that will automatically migrate to the new system while retaining compatibility for existing ACL tokens for clusters where ACLs are enabled.

This new system introduces a number of improvements including accessor IDs and a new policy model. It also includes a new CLI for ACL interactions and a completely redesigned UI experience to manage ACLs and policies. WAN federated clusters will need to add the additional replication token configuration in order to ensure the now mandatory WAN ACL replication works.

Read this guide for a step-by-step walkthrough of the new ACL system:

https://www.consul.io/docs/guides/acl.html

Note: for this version there are specific upgrade instructions to ensure the ACL migration goes smoothly. While the actual process should be no different from a regular upgrade, please be sure to read the upgrade notes before you start to have a good idea of the changes that will occur: https://www.consul.io/docs/upgrade-specific.html.

Other Enhancements and Bug Fixes

  • (Enterprise) Multi-datacenter Connect capabilities. This enables proxy connections across wan-federated Consul clusters.

  • New `consul debug` command to gather information about Consul clusters to aid in debugging issues.

  • DNS supports prefix lookups, such as lb-* to match services lb-001 or lb-service-007.
