Friends

My friend is planning to build a duplex villa. So he is in a fix
whether to

a) Use elevators instead of staircases so that it becomes easier for
their aged parents to commute from GF to FF and vice-vera
b) Provide ramps like in the case of shopping malls ?[Confused whether
to use ramp or elvator]
c)Provide option for both i.e a)one for staircase b)for elevators/Ramp

So friends what do you feel is it wiser to use elevators/Ramp instead
of staircases?

What i felt was

+ve's of using stair cases
1) Its not electricity dependent. No need to worry whether power is
there or not one can commute up and down
2) No issues of getting stuck unless the person himself wishes to wait
a little before proceeding.
3)One can take his own time to reach FF to GF or GF to FF.

-ve's of using stair cases:
1) Possibility of slipping suppose he oversteps.May lead to serious
crippling injuries or even fatal sometimes.
2)More strain in commuting from GF to FF and vice versa especially for
aged, sick or handicapped persons.

+ve's of using Elevators:
1) Less/Nil strain in commuting from GF to FF
2) No issues of slipping or falling

-ve's of using Elevators:
1)Elecrticity dependent. May not work if power is not present[Dont
know whether it works under generators]
2)There could be a possibility of getting stuck in between due to some
mechanical problms or power failure

So taking into aspect all these[may be more] is it wise to go in for
elevators insted of staircases or provide option for both[i.e
staircases and elevators]
Secondly which is preferrable ramp/elevator

The issue also one has to look may the cost aspect[Elevator/Ramp V/s
stair cases ] and electrical connectivity in designing elevator which
may take longer duration compared to staircases
.
Your opionions will be really helpfull to guys planning to build their
dream home.

Always willing to ger corrected

Thanks in advance

Regards

In my opinion i would go for staircase.

The reason being, we may not be always present to assist our parents
who would use the elevator. what if they get stuck and we don't even
come to know for a long time. Even if we are there at home what if we
don't get immediate assistance due to mechanical problem.

Regarding a ramp - i have used it in one house and never found it
comfortable.

i feel the best is staircase, it is easy to overcome the negative
points mentioned by you. first one being you can have a fixed carpet
to the staircase that would avoid slippery. and for the second one
have a room in the GF for old people/handicapped with attached bath.
that would avoid the going to FF many times.

The above is just my opinion.

I would go for multiple short flight of stairs with wider, short and
deeper steps, with good hand railings on both sides so that it is
easier to climb, as well as safe.

Not sure if Ramp is any safer than steps for old people, if they loose
their balance and fall , there is no stopping them from falling all
the way.

Elevator is an over-kill in an average duplex house. Staircase as
described by tvsh would be ideal. Also spiral staircase can be avoided
as they can be prone to accidents.

Hi Plotcrazy,

As others mentioned, elevator can be a overkill for a duplex house
unless you have some money tucked up in all pockets.

There should be atleast one bedroom in the ground floor and that is to
be given to the aged parents. Others to sleep upstairs.

plotcrazy,

Elevators would be a bit expensive compared to the stairs. If one is
considering elevators, then one should have both elevators and stairs.
It is not an either/or option when one has elevators. One can have
just stairs but with elevator, stairs is still a must.

TMUS is right.

In case of fire accidents elevators are a no-no

You must have stair case and elevators can be optional.

Hi
Use of elevators in home has many limitations
* Availability, variety, cost, space constrain
* It should be used with proper purpose, since the amount invested is
high.
There is one best option i found till day in the market, lift working
on pneumatics or hydraulic with a limitation of no of stops and travel
ht.There no lift machine room, pit required in these cases.
* Pneumatics is very simple and easy to install, the only limitation is
the capacity. It can carry only 150-200 kg
