Can this knowledgeable crowd, please provide information on harvesting
solar energy for as much as possible in the home.

1. I know everyone uses it for water heating.
2. How good is the technology for electricity (and how much space do I
need in terms of installing solar panels for that).
3. What about for cooking purposes - what technology is available to
tap energy for that.
4. What other uses are there.

What planning and expense is involved if I plan all of the above while
planning my house (also, would I need to follow some specific planning
techniques to be able to achieve these).

thank you in advance.

Hi,
I would like to suggest few things in this issue.
Solar heat is the one best source of energy that can be used to
satisty most of our needs in present scenario.
The best way to use is using solar home ups, in this you will not
completely depend on solar, it keeps charging when ever the sun light
is sufficient enough other times it uses normal raw power.
One benefit in this is you can satisfy all your modern needs with
this , like using your computer , tv , charging mobiles, lights and
fans. In case of winter, rainy days you are not required to run for
other ups since this it self will charge from raw power.
You can always up grade the capacity just by installing the additional
panels and batteries. There wouldn’t be any problems except regular
maintains of panels.
Instead to using regular solar panels on terrace, you can efficiently
plan on your sloop roofs. Now a days there are photo voltaic roof
tiles, external glazing, other shading devices like chajjas, car porch
coverings are available. Though they are little higher in price, the
amount of terrace space you gain, its nothing.

I'm not sure how popular / available LED lights are in India, but
certainly something you can look into.

I still hear that the upfront cost of these is quite high & one has to
use these overa significant period of time to negate the upfront
cost.

Is there anyone here, who has it installled and are almost completely
off of utility company..i.e KEB

Hi mahadev
Using solar energy systems will not make you completely off from KEB
raw power. It will only help you to save on your raw power consumption
and more over we all are concerned about environmental issues, using
solar can be a tiny contribution from each of us.

Led lights are now widely available in the market; they are available
for various purposes like main lighting, task lighting, and ambience
lights. Leading brands like wipro, Philips, havells are in this sector
for almost 2 years now.
There are many local & china brands also available in the market.
