The Windows login screen is not meant to be modified as a design decision by Microsoft. Making changes to it essentially requires hacking Windows in an unsafe and unstable manner. This means that if a Windows update modifies the lock screen or if the app crashes, you would be unable to login to your computer entirely. The feature could potentially stop working at any time, causing unpredictable side effects.

If Microsoft officially makes this possible or if we discover a safe way to add live wallpapers to the Windows lock screen, we will implement this feature. Currently, there are no known safe ways to accomplish this, which is why live wallpapers cannot be set on the lock screen by Wallpaper Engine.

However, you can still configure Wallpaper Engine to override the static lock screen image with a snapshot of your current live wallpaper. To do this, enable the Override lock screen image option in the General tab of the Wallpaper Engine settings.

As an alternative to relying on the lock screen, we suggest setting up Wallpaper Engine as a screensaver in combination with the On resume, display logon screen option enabled in the Windows screensaver settings. See our screensaver guide on how to configure Wallpaper Engine as your screensaver:

Wallpaper Engine allows you to use your wallpapers as screensavers. Traditionally, screensavers were used to protect displays from permanent image burn-in, however, most modern display technologies are not susceptible to these types of display damage anymore and you can safely use any type of wallpaper as a screensaver for aesthetic purposes. If you use a CRT, Plasma, OLED or similar screen technology that is susceptible burn-ins, we recommend using a playlist of wallpapers as a screensaver or a wallpaper with regular motion.

In order to get started with using Wallpaper Engine as a screensaver, hover over the Installed tab in the Wallpaper Engine window and select Configure Screensaver. Wallpaper Engine will now check if you have already installed the Wallpaper Engine screensaver for Windows. If the screensaver has not yet been installed yet, you will be asked to install it. Make sure your Windows user has administrative rights and that no antivirus app is blocking Wallpaper Engine from installing the screensaver.

After the initial installation, the Windows screensaver settings should open automatically, alternatively you can open the settings manually using the Settings & Preview button or by directly accessing the screensaver settings via Windows.

In order for the Wallpaper Engine screensaver to work, you need to first select Wallpaper Engine as your active screensaver in the Windows settings. You can open the Windows screensaver settings through the Windows control panel or by clicking on Settings & Preview while in screensaver mode in Wallpaper Engine. See the video below for the necessary steps:

In the Windows settings, you can control the time it takes until the screensaver appears and whether or not you will be presented with the Windows lock-screen when you return to your computer. These settings are entirely handled by Windows, Wallpaper Engine itself does not control the screen timeout or similar.

Once you have set up the screensaver in Windows, you can start configuring the Wallpaper Engine screensaver. Hover over the Installed tab in Wallpaper Engine and select Configure Screensaver. Wallpaper Engine will now preview your screensavers instead of your wallpapers - once you exit screensaver mode, you will return back to your wallpaper configuration.

In its default state, Wallpaper Engine will use the most basic setup where your screensavers are exactly the same as your actively running wallpapers. You can change this by changing the Screensaver is option to Configured separately at the top. With that option enabled, you can choose a wallpaper for each screen which is to be used as a screensaver or even use a completely different display profile or playlists for your screensaver setup. You can always return to the wallpaper configuration by clicking on the red Quit button in the upper left corner.

The Wallpaper Engine screensaver is activated through Windows itself, if the screensaver is not working correctly, please double-check to see if any of the default Windows screensavers work correctly for you. Check the Windows screensaver settings and your Windows energy settings to make sure that your screensaver is configured with the correct timeout that you expect and that Wallpaper Engine is set as your active screensaver.

The screensaver will be installed in C:\Windows\System32\wpxscreensaver64.scr, make sure no antivirus app is deleting this file by mistake or preventing it from being installed. You can also manually uninstall the screensaver by deleting that specific file, but be sure to not delete any other important Windows files in the System32 directory when doing so.

If you do not want your wallpapers to appear as fullscreen screensavers after a few minutes of inactivity, you can turn off the Wallpaper Engine screensaver functionality. Simply open the Windows screensaver settings and set the screensaver to None. No more actions are needed, you can re-enabled the screensaver functionality in the future by following the steps at the top of this article.

The craft that clearly goes into the average Wallpaper Engine background is seriously impressive. Sure, you get the odd phoned-in effort or overtly creepy anime creation. In general, though, this app provides countless entrancing animated wallpapers that make it a pleasure to keep revisiting your desktop.

You can make Wallpaper Engine launch when your computer starts by going to the Wallpaper Engine settings and navigating to the "General" tab. At the top, you can enable the automatic startup option which will launch the application quietly in the background whenever your system boots up.

When you select the high-priority option, Wallpaper Engine will register a Windows service. This means that Wallpaper Engine will start before other programs you have configured to automatically start alongside Windows. It will not affect the performance of the application in any other way.

The downside to using this high-priority option is that it can be less reliable, mainly due to the fact that some antivirus will overreact and block Wallpaper Engine from starting in this mode because they misidentify this as malicious behavior.

If you are using the high-priority option, try to switch to normal automatic start-up by disabling the high-priority option. As explained above, high-priority mode starts quicker but is less reliable for various reasons, mainly because it is sometimes blocked by antivirus software.

If neither the high-priority or normal-priority option work for you, check the antivirus software you have installed on your system. Some antivirus and firewall applications sometimes block Wallpaper Engine from automatically starting when your computer boots up. Your antivirus software likely has a "whitelist" feature which allows you to ignore certain folders or applications, make sure to whitelist the wallpaper_engine install directory and all executables in it.

Another rare cause can be that if you (or an application on your system) set the Wallpaper Engine .exe files to be run as admin only then it cannot automatically start either, you will need to remove the admin setting and toggle the automatic startup off and back on.

If the automatic startup does not work, the answer virtually always is somehow related to overzealous antivirus software. If you have antivirus or firewall applications installed, please double-check all their settings and security levels.

Check if the Wallpaper Engine icon is visible in the Windows tray next to the clock after you start your computer. If the icon is there after your system starts but either some or none of your monitors have their respective wallpapers shown, there is a problem with your graphics card drivers. Essentially, your graphics card drivers keep assigning your monitors new identifiers which leads Wallpaper Engine to believe that you are trying to configure a new monitor. You can fix this by changing the "Monitor identification" option in the General tab of the Wallpaper Engine settings to Layout or GDI. We also recommend that you do a clean re-installation of your graphics card drivers in this case, as it's an indicator for an underlying problem with your Windows installation.

This is the same problem as in the previous section, if you have multiple monitors and the wallpapers are being assigned to the wrong monitor at start-up, try changing the Monitor identification option in the General tab of the Wallpaper Engine settings to Layout or GDI.

Each option offers a different configuration for your monitors. The first option allows you to set a different wallpaper for each screen. The second, as we mentioned earlier, spreads one wallpaper across all screens. And the last option, just repeats the same wallpaper across all of them.

In short, yes. You can use Wallpaper Engine to set a live background on your vertical monitor. You have two options, you can either pick a high-resolution background and center it to fit your screen size. Or pick a wallpaper specially built for vertical monitors.

It is time to say goodbye to those bland and lifeless backgrounds on your PC monitors. With Wallpaper Engine you have the ability to transform your PC with some pretty impressive, dynamic wallpapers.
