Joni, I just checked and you're spot on - it is easy to change.

So here's a proposal: if anyone on the list objects to the group content (meaning mailing list and pages) being made public, speak up by replying to this message in the next 24 hours. Otherwise we'll flip the switch so that content is public. Note that I believe this will make the past discussions public, however I just checked and there has never been much volume on the list, so it's not very much content.

I'm pretty sure all you have to do is go in to the group settings under access and flip the first switch "who can view content" = anybody.  Under "who can post messages" keep it set to Members. I'd be +1 for moving public.

thx

It's a good question, Trent. Originally the list was for faciliating a private conversation about the evolution of the space. Now we've reached the point where there is a general consensus about what we want to achieve, so the list is more about facilitating the steps that need to be taken to reach that goal.

I personally have no objection to making the list public as long as membership is moderated to avoid spam (Google Groups with open membership can have real issues with spam).

How do others feel?

BTW, I don't know if you can convert a non-public Google Group to a public group (never had to do it before), so it may require creating a new group.

Drummond -

Assuming it's time to open the discussion and make it transparent, is
there a reason not to make the list public?

Not having seen any objections, I "flipped the switch" (thanks again to Joni's tip) and the group content is now public. So we have full transparency and will maintain that throughout the rest of the process.

Again, if you know anyone who you think should be participating in this list/group as we go through this process, please do invite them to join (any member can invite other members -- just go to http://groups.google.com/group/consolidated-identity/members_invite). There are five group managers now (Paul, Mary, Kaliya, Joni, and myself), so we should be able to approve invitees quickly.

Our next step is to complete a draft of the IC3 "term sheet" which we hope to have ready for review shortly. Stay tuned.
