Need some advise from X trail owners if poss. At the moment driving/towing with an Automatic Ford S Max 57 plate, looking to getting a newer X trail. Problem is, we don't know whether to go auto or manual?? I said I wouldn't go back to manual for driving, but he who does the towing says either. Any help or comments accepted.
X Trail for towing has to be manual as the auto has reduced weight capability due to CVT box. Unbelievable that this car, with its superb Nisson Terrano heritage from the previous decade, should be an obvious choice as a tow car doesn't have a sensible auto box.
why for towing? not as if you change gear much once on the open road. Apart from in a traffic jam I don't see what the attraction is and even the rare traffic jam is not enough to make me go to an auto.
I pretty much spend my life on the road for work and autos are a god send in traffic jams and stop start traffic in towns/cities which is pretty much a daily experience for me. Assuming it is a well matched gearbox and relatively powerful engine I would always go auto and for towing it just makes life easier all round especially for low speed manoeuvring and again in traffic. I reckon 80% of people who drive for work have autos if it's their decision what they get.
Well, I lost the argument and we ended up buying a 2012 X trail 2. 0 Teckna Dci Manual, nice car to ride in, I have still to drive it, my husband said it was nice to drive, very steady. The previous owners had used it for towing a caravan, but we will get the towball and electrics checked out. We pick it up Saturday.
Try towing a caravan up my regular tow route Livingston to Brora the auto box in my 2018 Seat Alhambra 2 litre diesel is the worst I have had for towing the coasting function on all these bends is a menace-no engine braking!
My Touareg is a conventional slushbox and has no Eco mode only Drive, Sport and Tiptronic - I'm normally in Drive and when I tried Coasting it was horrible, I was either lifting off too early and having to apply more throttle or too late and having to brake harder than normal - so I turned it off as I wasn't getting any fuel consumption improvement. I only use Sport when towing in hilly country or very twisty roads. Tiptronic is for when I drive it like I stole it
I know it is a little stupid but as my 06 x-trail is a great car that I've looked after BUT my partner can't drive, wondering if I can get it "auto-rised" instead of getting squat for the trade in on a car I dont really want. If I could keep my car but swap transmissions so the missus could drive and cart the kid around I would be happy. Any ideas on probs, viability and better ideas, please respond.
I wouldn't imagine that it is cost effective as not only would you have to change over the transmission, I expect that you will need to replace or reprogram the engine CPU, add a transmission cooler, possibly change the centre console and if the X-Trail had a AT gear indicator in the dash, there is that as well. There may be other changes required too.
Lets see you will need
Auto trans, & hope it's a good secondhand one, not stuffed!
heard of the odd case where the transmission has worn prematurely after protracted periods of hard use in all-wheel-drive mode.
new flywheel for torque convertor
oil lines to radiator
oil cooler as well?
New rad as well, unless the manual version used the auto radiator.
centre console parts for auto trans
ecu from an auto
too expensive IMNSHO.
