Field Assistant – Siemers Bat Research Station, Bulgaria
(June – September 2019)
The Acoustic and Functional Ecology Group at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology is seeking to employ a field assistant from the beginning of June until the end of September. The position is ideal for undergrad or grad students that want to gain experience in field work and behavioural/bioacoustics experiments.
Location: Siemers Bat Research Station, Tabachka, Bulgaria
Project: Bat-bushcricket sensory based predator-prey interactions. You will be working under the direct supervision of Antoniya Hubancheva
Job description: Assisting in catching and keeping in captivity wild bats and bushcrickets, collecting DNA samples, conducting behavioural experiments, maintaining equipment and research facilities, entering data in databases.
What we are looking for:
• Bachelor or master degree (or working towards such) in biology, ecology or other relevant fields
• Enthusiasm for studying animal behaviour
• English and/or Bulgarian
• Teamwork orientated (we will be working and living together for quite some time)

What else you need to know:
· Long working hours with primarily night work that could be both physically and/or mentally challenging but highly rewarding
· When working with bats, rabies vaccination is mandatory. If you don’t have one, you will need to get it (3 shots within 4 weeks). We will be happy to cover the costs and assist you with the logistics.
