The GSDI Association supports a highly competitive
Small Grants Program in which GIS and mapping professionals from
wide-ranging parts of the globe propose projects that further spatial
data infrastructure developments in their economically disadvantaged
nations. The projects range from educational workshops, to native
language newsletters, to metadata and portal development initiatives.
The grants are limited to $2,500 per recipient. This is equivalent to
the average per capita annual income for one or two individuals in many
of the countries in which we fund such projects. We encourage
applicants to formulate projects that directly address their most
pressing professional needs rather than imposing on applicants specific
projects. Funds typically are delivered to the professionals that apply
and not to a nameless bureaucracy. Those receiving funds are expected
to
achieve their stated project goals and report back the progress made
through use of
the grant funds. We have many more worthy applicants than we can
possibly support. For information on the recipients from this past
year,
consult http://gsdi.org/newslistarchive.asp. We are highly grateful to
the US Federal Geographic Committee (FGDC) and the USGS for its strong
support of this program.

Travel Grants Program: Through the Developing Nations Fund and through
funds generated from our global conferences, we provide partial and/or
full travel grants to worthy applicants to attend in-country workshops
or attend training workshops affiliated with our global conferences. We
move the location of our global conferences around the world in order
to
allow people from different nations to attend a major international
conference in their own region at minimal expense. Again, we have many
more worthy applicants desiring to attend these training and
professional conference sessions than we are able to support.
