I am trying to install a windows server 2012 on a KVM. The host system is Ubuntu Server 14.04. I would like to use a logical volume, say /dev/VG/win, as main device for the guest system. However, the installation process stops at the point where I choose the drive. No drive is found and I am asked to choose a (signed) driver. I tried several driver images but have found none so far that works. If I use an image file for the guest system, everything works fine.
When this feature is enabled, application windows will behave in much more helpful and logical manner (as compared to Windows 10) in that applications will return to their original positions on external displays when those displays are reconnected.
You'll also need to be running a windows insider build of Windows 10. The insiders Fast ring which is mentioned in the pre-requisites is now the Dev channel. One of the features required didn't come into Windows 10 until build 19619 and the nested virtualisation support for AMD didn't come in until build 19636 either, so that's a must if you are on AMD too. The windows insider page currently lists 19042.423 as the highest build available in Beta and 19041.423 as Release Preview, so for the moment this will not work correctly without using the Dev channel.
Once nested KVM is up and running and you've configured WSL to send X output to windows, you are ready to try a distro. If you keep following the post at this point you'll set up an Ubuntu 20.10 daily build. I ran through this as a check to see if everything was working, the steps for this were exactly the same as in the post.
I'm sharing this here because I think anyone doing this now will encounter these troubles, and I've sunk a lot time into trying harebrained fixes (classic Linux-hole wasting-time pattern) to no avail. I've posted a question on Reddit that's gotten some up-votes already (UPDATE: my posts were yanked for "too little information" provided, so I can't recommend these Reddit forums) (reddit.com/r/bashonubuntuonwindows...) that includes a link to a more detailed post on r/hackintosh that looks like it's unlisted, IOW waiting for mod approval that may never come.
It seems that the dev channel is locked into wanting to upgrade to windows 11. And I haven't found a way to get access to previous dev channel windows builds otherwise. It seems I need at least the old dev channel build 19619 iso to get past kvm-ok. My system is stuck on 19044, and doesn't support upgrading to windows 11 because of the TPM requirement. Thoughts?
I am glad this topic came up. With the windows 10 free upgrade looming I am not sure what to do. I am new to using VMs and currently have two running Win7 Pro and an unauthorized Win10 VM (test driving it) both of these VMs were created in 6.1.9 and use the default seabios and i440x that was recommended in 6.1.9. I just upgraded to Unraid 6.2 RC2 and everything went smooth. The driver for the upgrade of unraid was to get to a position where I have VMs that have been created in 6.2 with OVMF as that is going to be the default going forward and to be able to leverage the free upgrade to windows 10 as it seems to work better for the kids PC games. From reading the forums it is my understanding that making a change from seabios to ovmf or i440x to q35 is going to trigger MS authentication issues. My kids are just getting into PC gaming and at this point I don't have a feel for the best configuration...I get the feeling Win10 is better for gaming and I also get the impression that I better lock down my VM configuration...i.e. number of CPUS, memory etc as that can also create MS authentication issues.
I currently have seven (6) Win7 Pro 64 licenses. The maximum number of windows VMs that I anticipate running is 3. Any recommendations on how many I should upgrade to Win10 or CPU/memory assignments to give me the most flexibility?
One tip on upgrading from 7 to 10. During the upgrade process put the core count down to 1. Sometimes on a windows 7 vm upgrade can fail when using multi cores for some reason. After upgrade you can put the core count back up
Do you need to install win 7 first? I was under the impression that the current win 10 ISO allowed you to enter a win 7 product key. Here is a reference link from Microsoft:. -us/help/12440/windows-10-activation
Before you spend any more time on this, are you aware that Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 and thus running it in a VM requires encryption and some additional setup?
