If you have paid duty on the registration of a motor vehicle and are eligible for a refund, you can lodge your request for refund with us. Once your request is approved, your refund will be deposited in your nominated bank account.
Duty, which is collected by VicRoads on our behalf, is imposed and calculated at the time you register or transfer registration of a vehicle. The amount of duty depends on the type of vehicle, its value, and the date it is registered with VicRoads.
This means that if your vehicle was improved between buying and registering it, for example through repairs or modifications to obtain a roadworthy certificate, you must take these changes into account when declaring its dutiable value.
When you buy a roadworthy vehicle from a dealer, you pay them the duty and they lodge it and your registration application with VicRoads. Until payment is received, both you and the dealer are liable for duty.
If you buy a registered vehicle privately, you must complete the registration transfer application and pay duty directly to VicRoads within 14 days of the purchase. Penalties apply if you do not lodge your application on time, or if you under-declare your vehicle's value.
Where a vehicle is otherwise transferred to you, for example a gift from a parent to a child, and is garaged in Victoria, you must tell VicRoads and pay duty within 14 days of the transfer. A duty exemption only applies in rare circumstances.
Exemptions and refunds of duty already paid are available depending on circumstances, including transfers between spouses or domestic partners, and for vehicles used by eligible veterans, the incapacitated, primary producers and people with disabilities.
If you ever want to move a Club Permit vehicle to full registration in Victoria then the only time stamp duty is not payable is if the vehicle has previously been registered in your name. This info is available on the VicRoads website.

The stamp duty rate you pay will depend on the state where you live and will be registering the vehicle. It is also dependent on the vehicle's value. The majority of state revenue offices operate stamp duty cars on a sliding scale based on value.
In NT, the calculation for car stamp duty is $3 per $100 of the vehicle's dutiable value. If you purchase the vehicle from a dealership, you will pay based on the purchase price. If you purchase it from someone you know, you will pay based on market value.
Stamp duty must also be paid on used or second-hand vehicles, the same way it is for new vehicles. Some states offer different rates depending on whether you have purchased a new or used vehicle, however, the majority go solely based on the purchase price. States typically calculate the stamp duty payable by organising value into several categories. The lower the transfer fee or market value of the vehicle, the lower the duty.
If you do not pay your car stamp duty the state will reject the registration. Not only will your vehicle be unregistered, but you will also likely face penalties. If you are caught operating an unregistered vehicle you may face jail time.
If you pay stamp duty to register or transfer the vehicle you can apply for a refund if you meet your state's eligibility criteria. You will need to consult your state's guidelines. You may also be able to apply for a refund if you return the vehicle to the dealership where you purchased it within three months.

That varies on where you live, how much you paid for the vehicle and the size of the engine. You can read through our whole article to consult your state's stamp duty calculator for an accurate calculation.
You do not need to pay stamp duty if you receive the vehicle as the beneficiary in a will. Nor do you need to pay stamp duty if you receive a vehicle in a divorce settlement. However, the only other way to avoid paying motor vehicle duty is to buy a car under the stamp duty limit in your state or to go with an eco-friendly option.

The list price is the recommended retail price including GST and luxury car tax. If there is more than 1 recommended retail price for a vehicle, duty is calculated on the highest amount from the manufacturer, importer or principal distributor in Brisbane.
You work for a car manufacturer who is offering staff a 50% discount on the selling price on their latest model. Motor traders are offering the same model for $30,000. You end up purchasing the car for $15,000.
You will need to complete a modified vehicle statutory declaration when you register or transfer your registration. Only a person with a disability, or a relative or carer of a person with a disability, can apply to register or transfer the registration of a modified vehicle.
If several vehicles are being transferred, it is helpful to provide a spreadsheet with the relevant details. We cross reference the details in the covering letter with the information on the transfer form.
The vehicle registration duty will be reduced by the amount of transfer duty that was paid for the vehicle as part of the business contract. There may still be some duty payable on the registration or transfer of the vehicle.
You need to pay duty within 30 days of the date of the transfer or agreement to transfer. You will be sent an assessment of duty that may include daily interest if you did not lodge documents within 30 days. Interest is charged on overdue payments. Current transfer duty rates apply.
Note: If a vehicle is kept or garaged in NSW and doesn't have a NSW registration, it is considered 'unregistered'. Severe penalties apply if you drive an unregistered or uninsured vehicle.
You need a RWC (Road Worthy Certificate) whenever a vehicle changes owner and/or out of registration. However, it all depends who you bought the car from. Is it from a third-party or someone related/known to you? If you don't have the cash for the RWC and/or repairs, you can always renew the current registration as long as the person whose name is on the registration is okay with it.
But can I get a pink slip for it if it has only been out of rego for 1 month? Or does it need a blue slip as I'm changing ownership? The car isn't a dud at all. Reason she sold it was she's going overseas for 2 years on Thursday. Hence she didn't register it last month. It will 100% pass a pink slip but I don't want to have to do a blue slip.
I apologise, I didn't realise you were in NSW. Not sure how similar or dissimilar they are, but the rules in QLD state you need to get a RWC if changing ownership. If the car is out of rego for 1 month but not changing owners, you can just renew it (not sure how long you can leave a late renewal in QLD). Hence I hinted at getting it renewed under the original owners name. But you're best off getting your information from someone who knows the NSW rules. I'm only speaking for QLD.
Thank you! Sorry I didn't mention I was in NSW. Sometime forget were not all from here. I ended up transferring it into my name. Only had to get a pink slip and it is now registered ! Unfortunately I had to purchase 1 year of rego instead of 6 months as it was out for longer than 21 days. The rms website is a little bit misleading.
A) didn't get a road worthy check
B) the car was registered in the owners ex-boyfriends name
C) it required so much work that the RWC place I went to told me it would be better used for scraps
D) well, shit
@Dagmar I have no idea why you are getting negged. Yes, the OP is in NSW but they don't state that in their post. If you don't live in NSW how would you know? Why get negged for trying to help? I've fixed that with a +
I think Pink slip is enough, my experience was buying an unregistered car at auction which came with pink slip. But you will have to pay for the 1 month unused rego, that is the rego starts from a month ago instead of from when you pay the RMS. Don't forget you'll also have to pay 3% stamp duty on the purchase price and the transfer must be done within 2 weeks of purchase or you get a fine of around $100. You may have to get a paper copy of the green slip as it won't transfer to the RMS automatically if bought online.
A blue slip is a full inspection of your vehicle, different from a pink slip, as it checks all the components of your car, for leaks, lights, seat belts, brakes, suspension thoroughly. A blue slip also has a written off vehicle check, that identifies stolen vehicle that have been re-badged with number plates from a wrecked vehicle, a forensic vehicle identity check that identifies any vehicle and a design inspection to make sure your vehicle is up to manufactures standards.
