Afterstudying Sanskrit and Sinhala under Pelane Sri Vajiragnana Thero and reading world literature in his spare time while working as a clerk, Silva wrote Lakshmi, his second novel, in 1922.[1] He continued to write popular novels and short story collections. Several of his novels include Kalae Handa (the first Sinhala novel to be made a movie) and Hingana Kolla, which was also made into a movie.

His residence 'Silvermere' at No. 126, W A Silva Mawatha, Wellawatte has now been turned in to a museum containing artifacts of his time, hand written manuscripts, copies of novels, and other memorabilia.

Some of his extensive correspondence with English missionaries, including that great Musician Ira D. Sankey, is preserved in the Library of the British Museum, where it has been subjected to research by many a Sri Lankan Scholar. Methodists have sung his praises as a hymn writer, temperance leader, lay preacher and the first layman in the Methodist Synod. Yet his greatest claim to fame lies in the fact that he was indeed the first Sinhala novelist.

I am saddened that apart from the head stone at the family grave in the Rawatawatta, Moratuwa General Cemetery, there is nothing to commemorate this literary genius who made such a significant contribution to Sinhala Literature.

The novel is a literary genre which depicts social reality, its discomforts, and political underpinnings. By looking at three Sinhala novels published in 2019, this paper investigates how the woman is portrayed through a patriarchal lens in literature. The chosen novels are Nishkranthiya by Sunethra Rajakarunanayake, Kumara Kobei by Shamel Jayakody and Thee Haa Thaa by Surath de Mel. They have unique narrative styles and a noteworthy representation of femininity. The study is based mainly on the following themes of feminist theory: patriarchy, sex, and gender. The main characters of all three novels are women and patriarchy plays a major role in their lives. All three novels present patriarchy as the norm and it is reinforced through issues concerning domestic violence, gender, and reproduction.
