We have just released Version 1.3 with the following changes:
Updated python and python packages, including NetworkX to version 1.8dev.
Updated Hexsim-based functions to Hexsim version 2.5.1, which improves conversion of .asc input files to hxn files.
Added support for locales (e.g., areas in Europe) that use a comma instead of a period as decimal separator.

The free software can be downloaded from connectivitytools.org

Hello,

At your prompt, I installed the new version, and proceeded directly with reading the manual, and beginning the tutorials. So far, I haven't proven capable of executing even the first exercise, getting a message, Output = 0.
As far as I know I have done exactly as instructed, loaded the asc file, designated an output directory, given it a name, and specified 500 (the documentation indicates that the units are hectares). Are there other installs that I need to perform? Other software I need to have updated?
Thanks!

You should get text in the output box similar to this:

Rows: 102 Columns: 217 Hexagons: 22134
Generating from source: C:\...\tutorial\Exercise_1\habitat.asc
Output = 0
Resolution: 8
Writing hexagon file: C:\Users\carlos\Desktop\tutorial\hab5.hxn

Then you should see a hxn file in the relevant folder.

Can you give more details:
Operating system? 32 or 64 bit?
Any other text in the output box besides "output=0"

Hi,
The output looks like this, though when I did ti last night I remembered smaller numbers, more like yours:
Rows: 2309 Columns: 4857 Hexagons: 11214813
Generating from source: C:\Executables\ConnectivityAnalysisToolkit\tutorial\Exercise_1\habitat.asc
Output = 0

I don't get the resolution message, or the writing file message.
64 bit machine.

Thanks,

jlt

I would be surprised if you could generate a hexagon file of 11 million hexagons, so that's what causing your problem in this case (maybe not last night).
Are you sure that you are entering a value of 500 hectares?
To get 11214813 hexagons, each hexagon would be 0.1 hectare, or 1000 sq meters in area.

sorry, I did it again really quick so I could get the screen capture - here's the message using 500:

Rows: 102 Columns: 217 Hexagons: 22134
Generating from source: C:\Executables\ConnectivityAnalysisToolkit\tutorial\Exercise_1\habitat.asc
Output = 0

I've tried it with and without the *.hxn extention, as well as directing the output  to it's own directory...

I think the problem may be that the application doesn't have write permission to that folder. Can you try moving the whole tutorial directory to your Documents folder, and trying again?

Hi,
same output from documents folder.
I am an administrator, the only active account on this machine...

Rows: 102 Columns: 217 Hexagons: 22134
Generating from source: C:\Users\tuilbox\Documents\ConnAnalToolkit\tutorial\Exercise_1\habitat.asc

I didn't go through a formal uninstall when I updated to 1.3, simply overwrote the entire directory... any chance there is something "residual'?

No, it should overwrite without a separate uninstall. I'll try to think of other potential reasons for this.

Can you try installing version 1.2.1 ( http://www.klamathconservation.org/CAT/v1_2_1/CAT64.zip ) and see if you get the same behavior? Please uninstall version 1.3 first.

yes. they are identical...  but i did it with each, with the same results. i uninstalled 1.3, then simply ran the toolkit executable from the unzipped folder...

Did the CAT software work successfully on your system previous to installing v1.3? You mentioned above that you had a previous version installed.

truth is, i don't know the answer... part of me thinks this is perhaps the glitch i ran up against, and then moved on to the myriad other things - and never really explored using your toolset. ... i can't believe it's been two years though!... still on my list, and i was psyched to get your reminder.

Please install the following if they are not already installed on your system:

Microsoft .NET Framework 4 web installer

   http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17851

Microsoft Visual C++ x64 (+ SP1)

  http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=13523

(And be sure to choose the Documents directory as the target directory for writing the hxn file).

Hi Carlos,
I ran both installers, and found that they are both installed.
When given the option to 'repair' the C++ one, i didn't as I don't know what else might be effected.
Thanks,
jlt

It's possible that your C++ installation may be corrupted. At this point since we can't reproduce this on other systems, I've run out of suggestions. I'll let you know if we get another report similar to this.

Ok. For the record, I reinstalled the C++, then tried it again with output to the Documents folder, with the same message.
Please let me know is this comes up elsewhere, or if you think of other potential solutions or diagnostics to try.
Thanks,

Hello,

I can see this is an old thread, but I wanted to add that I had the exact same issue as JayLee. When trying to use CAT, the output would end at the line "output=0" and no hexagon file would be written. Because of this, I was not able to complete even the first exercise of the tutorial. I've tried checking the write permissions, reinstalling the software, etc. but the same problem persists. This was on a Windows 7 desktop.

Cheers,
Kate

Hi - I'm sorry that you had this issue. I just tried installing and running CAT 1.3 on a Windows 10 system, and could not reproduce the error. I don't have any other ideas for potential fixes other than what I suggested previously If you are using it for a lab, do the other users in the lab (if any) report a similar problem?
