Hi all,

I'm hoping you can help.

I’m trying to run a basic model to generate particle trajectories around Ireland. I think I have everything right and I’ve had no problems running sims in the past both in this region or elsewhere, but here, the model is throwing a -1 exit code for all outputs after 1 day of simulation irrespective of the “timeMax” number. I’ve triple checked the files and don’t think I’ve missed anything. I've attached all the relevant files bar the nest files obviously.

I downloaded Hycom GLBu0.08/expt_91.1 nest data using getdata within CMS using a fill value of -30000 as per the HYCOM docs. The simulation runs fine for the 1st day (output at 86400s), but then all coordinates for subsequent output times are "-1" suggesting the particles have left the model domain. That means they would have had to travel 1000s km in 1 day, and comparing the points from their source to their location after 1 day seems reasonable in terms of distance travelled.

Can anyone tell me why I'm being stupid/what I've done wrong, or provide a suggestion as to why this is happening?

Many thanks in advance,

Tony Knights

Hi Tony,

This is just an hypothesis, but I assume the issue is with either the wrong fill value used (either during the getdata or in your nest_1.nml), or an issue with any conversion factor that should be applied to your velocities, but would need to have access to one of your nc files to check that.

Look into these and let us know.
Best,
