Will CMS just move particles if the release location is designated land and avoid coast is on?

I know this is a really simple question. The user manual states that the particle would exit with code -2, but it does not specify if that is with or without avoid coast on. I ask this because I am randomly generating particle release points from polygons. I am using the landmask that HYCOM states they use (GEBCO), but I want to ensure that my particles will release. So, does anyone know if, when avoid coast is on, CMS will just move you particles at time 0 if they are on land or will it still exit? Thanks so much!

Hi Anthony,

I don’t have a definite answer but I am pretty sure that the particles will just be considered outside of the domain and get either an exitcode -2 or -5, since there won’t be any oceanographic data at these locations. Defining where the particles should be moved to to reach the ocean is case-specific and may never be generically implemented in the CMS.

I have mistakenly done this (released particles "on land"), with avoid coast turned on. CMS does not place them into the water, it exits at time 0.

Thanks. That is exactly what I needed to know.

Hi Anthony,

If particles are on land they will not get an exit status -2 regardless of turning on or off avoidcoast. The exit status -2 Is for particles that leave the domain boundaries from the grid cells that have current velocities, not from the mask of polygons.

Hope this helps,
