Hello all!

Many apologies for the long silence, I just returned from the Second Life Education Community Conference 2008 (SLEDcc) in Tampa, FL in which I and another participant in this cohort were the co-chairs.  As you can imagine, the last week was pretty crazy!  For those who may be interested in viewing the archives and resources, please see the SLEDcc website at http://sledcc.wikispaces.com - including videos of the keynotes and more.  After seeing all of the wonderful ways that educators are using the Second Life platform in their classes and communities at the SLEDcc sessions, I am more convinced than ever that virtual worlds offer unique ways to reach students and develop our own skills for teaching and learning.  We had a wonderful time and   I hope that explains the delay in responding to some of your emails - I am just catching up!  (And no, I haven't done the first homework assignment yet, eep.)

Connectivism in Second Life - Cohort Meeting Times

Based on the responses to the Doodle schedule maker, the Second Life cohort of the Connectivism course will have three weekly meeting times.   Since our participation in this cohort is entirely voluntary, obviously attendance is not required at ANY of the three meetings, but in order for this experiment to have much value, I would encourage you to a) pick one of the days as your primary meeting time so that we can establish relationships with each other in world and b) attend one of the other weekly times if you have to miss your regular day and/or if you want to get to know more of the people in the Second Life cohort.

Please note the times below are in PACIFIC DAYLIGHT TIME (aka Second Life Time or SLT), as Second Life is based in San Francisco, California.  If you need to do a time conversion, see http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html to convert these meeting times to your local time zone.  If the form is too confusing, the easiest thing to do is simply log into Second Life, look at the clock in the upper right corner, and see how many hours behind/ahead your local clock is, then add or substract the same number of hours from the times below:

TUESDAYS at 11AM SLT/PDT (-7GMT)
THURSDAYS at 6PM SLT/PDT (-7GMT)
SUNDAYS at 5PM SLT/PDT (-7GMT)

Because the course officially began this week, that would make our first meeting today in a few hours!  If you are able to attend, please do, and we'll continue on this schedule for the rest of the course.   If none of these three times work for you, please know I tried to choose the times that worked for the most people based on the availability given.  Depending on how we use this email group and what we build/do in the Connectivism Village in Chilbo, there may still be opportunities to participate asynchronously.

Meeting Locations in Chilbo (in Second Life)

There are two main locations for our use in the Connectivism course in Second Life.  The primary meeting location for discussions is the Shrubbery Amphitheatre in Chilbo, and we have land to create the Connectivism Village area (which is currently empty!).  I expect the first week or two, we will just meet for discussions in the Amphitheatre until we figure out how/what we want to create in the Connectivism Village area.

If you have not already received an invitation in-world to join the Chilbo Community Building Project group, please let me know so I can re-send the invitation.  You will need to be a member of the
group to have permissions on Chilbo land.

With such short notice, I expect many won't be able to make today's meeting time, but no worries, we can start in earnest in the subsequent meetings.  I look forward to meeting you in the Shrubbery Amphitheatre in a few hours and will be scrambling to catch up on our homework until then!

Warmest regards,

- Chris/Fleep
