First Book is pleased to announce a Special Distribution from the
National Book Bank! Copies of the novel Foster Care Odyssey: A Black
Girl's Story are available thanks to a generous donation from Townsend
Press.
Left as an infant with Catholic Charities in 1950s Buffalo, N.Y.,
Theresa Cameron spent her childhood in foster homes because her mother
never signed the final adoption papers. "Very little has been written
to convey what children experience and how they feel living among
strangers, and even less about that of black children," notes Cameron,
now a Harvard-trained urban planner and designer, in her introduction
to Foster Care Odyssey: A Black Girl's Story. Cameron's ability to
clearheadedly evaluate the morass of negative feelings without lapsing
into sentimentality is one of the most affecting aspects of this
memoir, which covers 19 years in foster care (Publishers Weekly).
Recipient groups should be advised that Foster Care Odyssey is a book
that is best suited for mature teens, due to the inclusion of mature
themes.Cameron's book is a memoir which includes frank information
about Cameron's difficult - though ultimately inspirational - years
growing up in the foster care system. Foster Care Odyssey chronicles
the difficulties the author personally experienced in her youth,
including neglect, racism, and clinical depression. Additionally, this
title deals with situations she witnessed in the lives of her fellow
foster children, such as physical and sexual abuse, drug use, teen
pregnancy, crime and incarceration.
