This newsletter, which will be sent to you periodically, will provide
updated information that you may need and to help spread the word to
others who may also be interested in volunteering!
Volunteering for the Atlanta St. Patrick's Parade and associated
activities is a great way to have fun, meet friends and contribute to
your community. The 2008 Parade is shaping up to be the best ever,
and, if the weather complies, we expect to greatly exceed the 350,000+
crowd that attended in 2007. With that in mind, the role of our
volunteers, the heart and soul of the Parade, has become increasingly
important to make for a successful Atlanta St. Patrick's Parade and
Festival.
Please sign up to be a 2008 volunteer! You can sign up online at:
www.stpatsparadeatlanta.com/Volunteer.htm
Come to our St. Pat's Pig Pickin' to sign up as a volunteer or just to
have fun with the Atlanta St. Patrick's Parade! Great food, drink,
Irish entertainment, and family fun! See the attached flyer for
details.
Become a St. Pat's Pal
This year marks the second year of the Atlanta "St. Pat's Pals", a
club comprised of volunteers willing to assume expanded
responsibilities at the Parade, including acting as Block Captains and
overseeing groups of Parade day volunteers. The cost to join the St.
Pat's Pal club is only $25/person and entitles you to (among other
benefits TBD!) a special edition St. Pat's Pal shirt and free entrance
to the VIP party at Atlanta Underground directly following the
Parade. Join St. Pat's Pal's today and become a Parade Insider!

Basic duties of Parade Volunteers:
Answer questions from spectators (See the Frequently Asked Questions
below)
Keep the spectators out of the Parade route and help line-up the
parade. Parade Volunteers will help line-up the parade, distribute
Parade flyers, keep units moving in a timely fashion, help maintain
the curb line, and prevent spectators from moving into the street.
Be available from check-in at 10:00 AM, until 3:00 PM. The Post-Parade
Party will begin at the Event Loft at Underground Atlanta following
disbanding.
Be pleasant and helpful.
Be willing to have fun. Most people who attend our Parade are well-
behaved. So, your job is often not very difficult, meaning you'll have
more fun!
Volunteering Details
Parade Volunteers are encouraged to attend one information session,
and must be present on Parade day (Saturday, March 15, 2008) from
10:00 AM through 3:00 PM.
On Parade day, Parade Volunteers will be provided with a light
breakfast then assigned to an area along the Parade route. Block
Captains oversee each area and help address questions and other issues
that arise throughout the day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Are the information sessions mandatory?
A: The information session is important, so it is strongly requested
that you attend one of the information sessions, where we introduce
you to some of the Block Captains, as well as convey important parade
information to new and returning volunteers. Each year some procedures
change, so we want volunteers to be aware of anything that changes,
along with a refresh of past procedures. Even veteran volunteers are
requested to attend one of the two information sessions.
Q: Where and when are the information sessions?
A: The first information session will be held on Sunday, March 9,
2008, at 2:00 PM at Fado's Irish Pub in Buckhead, and the second
session will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at 7:00 PM at the
Harp Irish Pub (1425 Market Blvd - Holcomb Bridge at Old Alabama in
Roswell). Other sessions may be added and will be announced later as
needed.
Q: If I can't make the information session, can I still volunteer?
A: You can still volunteer, but we strongly encourage you to attend
the information session. If you miss the session(s), it may limit your
ability to perform certain duties.
Q: On parade day, where do I check-in?
A: At 10:00 AM on parade day, all volunteers should arrive at Parade
Headquarters (the location will be announced at a later time). The
Headquarters staff will check you in, answer any last minute
questions, and assist with getting you to your designated volunteer
location.
Q: Where should I park?
A: Visit the website www.stpatsatlanta.com for suggestions of where to
park.
MARTA is a GREAT ALTERNATIVE!
Q: How long will I be needed on Parade Day?
A: We ask that all parade volunteers check in at the Headquarters at
10:00 AM. The Parade begins at Noon. Your volunteer commitment will
end about 3:00 PM. Your block captain will release you to go to the
Event Loft at Underground Atlanta, where the Post-Parade Party will be
held.
Q: Name three things I'll wish I'd brought with me to volunteer on
Parade day.
A: This would depend on the weather. For a cold day, you'll want to
bring a warm hat, warm gloves, and warm shoes. For a sunny day, you'll
want to bring sunglasses, suntan lotion, and a hat. Remember - the
parade goes on rain, shine or snow.
Q: Is there a dress code?
A: We provide an Atlanta St. Patrick's Parade T-shirt to be worn over
your own clothing. You will receive this on Parade Day at check-in.

The 2008 King Day of Service is three months away, January 21, and I
hope every member of the national service family is planning to
participate.
Thanks in large part to your help, the 2007 King Day of Service was
the
largest and most successful ever, with hundreds of thousands of
Americans serving in projects in all fifty states, extensive media
coverage, and many new corporate and nonprofit partners seeing the
value
of making the King Holiday "a day on - not a day off."
We are within sight of the day when the King Holiday is synonymous
with
service, and tens of millions of Americans honor Dr. King by serving
on
his day.
This year, we'd like to move toward this goal by fully engaging our
network -- the 7,000 plus organizations and two million Americans who
make up national service. I hope that every single member of the
national service family - whether you are part of Senior Corps,
AmeriCorps, VISTA, NCCC, or Learn and Serve America - whether you are
a
grantee, subgrantee, project sponsor, service site, member or
volunteer
- will lead or participate in this year's King Day of Service. By
doing
this we can launch the King Day of Service to a whole new level of
success and impact.
The 2008 King Holiday will be especially important as it comes 40
years
after Dr. King's assassination. This means that schools, community
groups, faith-based institutions, and the media will be more focused
than ever on Dr. King's life and teachings. To help turn this
attention
into positive change for communities, we are pleased to join with
other
organizations to honor Dr. King through "40 Days of Nonviolence:
Building the Beloved Community." The King Day of Service will
kickoff
40 days during which families, schools, faith communities, and other
organizations will plan service projects and education activities
promoting Dr. King's message of nonviolence and social justice.
Participating in this initiative is natural for us because the
concepts
of nonviolence and building the Beloved Community reflect the work
national service does everyday - mentoring at-risk youth, making
neighborhoods safer, expanding health services, teaching children to
read, and helping people out of poverty.
To help you plan and implement the King Day of Service, please visit
mlkday.gov <http://www.mlkday.gov/> . This site has project tips,
marketing and fundraising resources, a video, and a technology tool
that
will allow you to register both your project and your volunteers. We
will update that site with more information on the "40 Days"
initiative
so please check back.
January also represents the second year the Corporation is playing a
leading role in National Mentoring Month. As you plan your King Day
of
Service activities, I hope that you will consider opportunities to
link
these activities by using the King Day of service to honor mentors in
your community, recruit new mentors, provide training to mentoring
programs, encourage mentor pairs serve together on King Day, or
otherwise promote National Mentoring Month.
If you have questions or need help, please e-mail mlk...@cns.gov or
call
Rhonda Taylor at 202-606-6721. I look forward to the best King Day
of
Service ever.
-------------
I want to update you on the status of the Corporation's primary
technology contract. A couple of weeks ago, as I reported to you
then,
a contractor filed for bankruptcy and laid off many staff assigned to
the Corporation.
I am pleased to share with you that no major systems have been
adversely
affected; moreover, we have secured an interim contractor and are
working to bring the eGrants and eSPAN Help Desk up to full capacity.
As a result, we do not anticipate changing timelines for two priority
items:
* October Progress Reports and Financial Status Reports for
Senior Corps and VISTA that are due October 31
* October 25 launch of the new progress reporting system for
AmeriCorps State and National in anticipation of the December 3
deadline
We will continue to monitor activity on the Help Desk and shift
staffing
as necessary to accommodate any spike in calls that result from these
deadlines. There is one change of note: in order to ensure a smooth
rollout of Phase II of the My AmeriCorps portal, we have pushed the
launch from November to December.
I'll continue to keep you updated until our IT systems are fully back
on
track. Every day we've been wrestling with this issue, I've been
struck
by our staff's ingenuity and patience. Thank you.
In service,
David Eisner
CEO, Corporation for National and Community Service

Aquarius
October 23, 2007
You may find it hard to take a realistic approach to your emotions
today, dear Aquarius. A sensitive issue is apt to be pulling on you
in
such a way that is leaving you feeling like you are way out in left
field in terms of the way in which you relate to others. You might
want to consider letting someone else take the lead for once and
allow
equilibrium to form before the next decision is made.
----------------------
Aquarius
October 24, 2007
After the rush of energy over the past few days, dear Aquarius, today
you may feel a powerful letdown. Not every day can be filled with
adventure and excitement. For now, you just need to take care of the
routine matters that are a by-product of life on Earth. However, keep
in mind that there are many weekends coming up, and with the right
kind of planning, you can get excitement back into your life.
------------------------
Aquarius
Weekly horoscope
You have a revelation regarding the things you consider important on
Monday, as the Moon in Pisces conjuncts your ruling planet Uranus in
your sector of values. You may learn that what you really need in
life
is quite a bit different than what you think you need. Once you learn
that lesson, you'll make new choices for yourself. Be extra careful
on
Sunday as you exercise or engage in an athletic activity. The Moon in
your sector of sports squares erratic and unpredictable Uranus, so
pay
attention to what you're doing while you're in the gym.
----------------------------
October
On October 5 and 6, Aquarius, you'll find that although you have
extra
motivation, you'll be pulled in too many directions to focus
properly.
You may have to just accept the fact that you can't finish anything
completely. A New Moon in Libra on October 11 will open the door to
new connections. Over the next few weeks concentrate on building
relationships and making contacts to change your circumstances for
the
better. Things will become more serious and intense on October 12.
This is a good time to do in-depth research, but for a few weeks
you'll have to keep a close eye on communications and logistics.
Things will easily go awry and you'll need to follow up, especially
on
October 19. The Moon in your sign on October 19 and 20 will be a
creative time, but there will also be an element of confusion. With
the Sun in Scorpio after October 23, you'll have to work harder to
gain information and understanding. Be very clear in your discussions
and don't let resentments grow and create even more hard feelings. On
October 23, set aside some time to allow someone close to express
what
they are feeling and clear the air. Misunderstandings lately may have
been creating hidden frustrations. A Full Moon in Taurus on October
25
will point up the need to be more careful and deliberate with your
work and personal matters. On October 27, disagreements with someone
close may come up regarding these issues

Dear Bermira,
In 36 years, Hillary and I have shared a lot of birthdays, and each
year I'm amazed at everything she has accomplished. This is a very
special year: we're celebrating Hillary's 60th, and I hope you'll
join
me in sending her a birthday message, sharing your wishes for her and
your hopes for the coming year.
I'll make sure to share your message with Hillary. And please
encourage your friends and family to send their messages as well.

Thank you for committing to be a past volunteer for the Atlanta St.
Patrick's Day Parade! The 2008 Parade, Atlanta's 127th, will be held
on Saturday, March 15, 2008, at noon - only 150 days away!
The 2008 Parade is shaping up to be the best ever,
and, if the weather complies, we expect to greatly exceed the
350,000+
crowd that attended in 2007.
Pat's Pig Pickin' to sign up as a volunteer or just
to
have fun with the Atlanta St. Patrick's Parade! Great food, drink,
Irish entertainment, and family fun! See the attached flyer for
details.
Become a St. Pat's Pal
This year marks the second year of the Atlanta "St. Pat's Pals", a
club comprised of volunteers willing to assume expanded
responsibilities at the Parade, including acting as Block Captains
and
overseeing groups of Parade day volunteers. The cost to join the St.
Pat's Pal club is only $25/person and entitles you to (among other
benefits TBD!) a special edition St. Pat's Pal shirt and free
entrance
to the VIP party at Atlanta Underground directly following the
Parade. Join St. Pat's Pal's today and become a Parade Insider!

If have any questions not answered on this page, please go to:

Call the Parade Phone at (678) 754-5834.
The Post-
Parade
Party will begin at the Event Loft at Underground Atlanta following
disbanding.
Be pleasant and helpful.
Be willing to have fun. Most people who attend our Parade are well-
behaved. So, your job is often not very difficult, meaning you'll
have
Block
Captains oversee each area and help address questions and other
issues
that arise throughout the day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Are the information sessions mandatory?
A: The information session is important, so it is strongly requested
that you attend one of the information sessions, where we introduce
you to some of the Block Captains, as well as convey important parade
information to new and returning volunteers. Each year some
procedures
change, so we want volunteers to be aware of anything that changes,
along with a refresh of past procedures.
If you miss the session(s), it may limit
your
ability to perform certain duties.
A: Visit the website www.stpatsatlanta.com for suggestions of where
to
Your block captain will release you to go to the
Event Loft at Underground Atlanta, where the Post-Parade Party will
be
held.
Q: Name three things I'll wish I'd brought with me to volunteer on
Parade day.
A: This would depend on the weather. For a cold day, you'll want to
bring a warm hat, warm gloves, and warm shoes. For a sunny day,
you'll
want to bring sunglasses, suntan lotion, and a hat. Remember - the
parade goes on rain, shine or snow.
Q: Is there a dress code?
A: We provide an Atlanta St. Patrick's Parade T-shirt to be worn over
your own clothing. You will receive this on Parade Day at check-in.
