I have essembled my Mendelmax, nearly everything works, it homes nicely, heaters go on etc but issuing the extrude 5mm command in pronterface doesnt fire up the extruder stepper. (yes everything is at an appropriate temp)

I have a Ramps 1.4 board that came with 4 driver boards already plugged in, so in my case the E0 has been left empty.  Should I move the board in E1 and put it into E0?

Is there any command I can issue to manually test the second extruder stepper?

Yes the first extruder should be E0. The second should be E1. Since you only have one, it should be E0.

Most programmers start numbering things starting at 0, so it's something to expect to see more of.

Note: As always, power off the machine before swapping bits/cables about

Hi April

As stuart said, the cleanest and easiest way is to move the driver
driver in E0,
hot end in D10
temp probe into T0
Marlin/Sprinter with a Motherboard profile of 33 or 34

If you want a quick test the following MAY work depending on firmware...

Using profile 34, the second extruder could have
Driver in E1
Hot end in D9
temp probe in T2

Issue the command T1, if it completes succesfully try the extrude extrude.
If it says "invlaid extruder number" or something of the sort, just move the driver and wires

T0/T1 should switch between extruder 0 and 1

Thanks for that, I moved the driver into the E0 socket and rewired everything. Now its all working really well

My next problem seems to be that the ABS isnt coming out of the nozzle fast enough when I try a test print, but Im happy to have made it this far and will tackle that over the weekend.

so  I have been having problem with ext0 not provided any torqe(I can easily stall the motor with my fingers), I adjusted pot, switched out stepper driver and tried a different stepper motor all with same results, now I am thinking ramps is culprit. how hard is it to get my single extruder output to go out the ext1 instead of ext0? do I have to set it up as if it were dual extruders? thanks for your time.
