element14 currently has these on special:

http://au.element14.com/raaco/126762/cabinet-organiser-44compartment/dp/136709101

It's a good price for a relatively large storage unit.

They don't have stock right now but I have heard they are getting more stock and taking backorders, and the special price should be good until April.

Maybe purchasing some of these should be considered for the hackerspace?

Cheers,
  Luke

guess it does the job. Just don't expect quality at that price.

On the contrary Raaco are the top-of-the-line workshop component
storage cabinets.
Made in Denmark with a stout welded mild steel cabinet and a wide
range of accessories.
Normal price in Oz is over $150 however this particular model is
selling for $30 on Ebay (in Europe).
It's height falls between the current full height and medium height
cabinets and I can't find this model on the Raaco website so perhaps
it is from a discontinued series.
Not that it would matter if you are getting a set of matching ones -
they are a good thing.

Yeah, these are *not* your usual dirt-cheap crappy plastic ones you might get from Jaycar or Aldi or whatever, they're made of steel (with plastic drawers) and they're supposed to be very good quality, as Michael confirmed.

They appear to be really, really good value at these prices.

Wow, good find, even if they were $30. I'm fed up with having crappy
stuff and determined now to only buy decent things, but I'm not in the
market for these right now unfortunately. Go for your life!

Please let us know what a reasonable quantity would be ... based on the
we currently have (MakerFaire element14 order ? Other stuff lying
around) ... or what we should aim for.

By the way, this is the current catalogue of specials from element14 that I found these in:

http://au.element14.com/images/e14/content/en_AU/publications/connect/landing/AUS_LR_WEB.pdf

I'm sure there might be a few other things in there that are generally of interest to the community.

Looks like that is a big error in price by element 14…

If I log in with my platinum pricing, it is 49.00 each J

I ordered 5 at the cheaper price on back order J

It could be that they have picked up a production over-run or needing
to clear excess stock.

Anyway, I'd suggest that the space purchases 4 or 5 as Luke mentioned earlier.

Could we add a few extra if members are interested in grabbing one but
not interested enough to make an order especially?

I know of several people who have ordered and received these at the advertised special price.

The special price is listed in their printed specials catalogue here:  http://au.element14.com/images/e14/content/en_AU/publications/connect/landing/AUS_LR_WEB.pdf

This is consistent with the price listed on the element14 website: http://au.element14.com/raaco/126762/cabinet-organiser-44compartment/dp/136709101

It's not an error or mistake.

The end date for this special pricing is April 27th.

I have just ordered two of these for CCHS.

I got 10 of these last week to replace my very old plastic drawers – very happy with the new ones.

The extra-large drawers at the bottom are very handy.

Now to find room for the other 5 on the work bench.

What was the shipping on these. at 10kg each unit according to the page i doubt the free shipping counts for much.
If it does let me know as i need afew of these myself.

I'd be curious about the shipping too. I looked at the shipping page on the site and shipping was close to $13 for up to 20kg, I think. So the best I could imagine is to get 2 units and maybe the shipping would be that price? I don't know how much the shipping increases for 'extra' weight though.

How did it work out in practice?

Thanks,
Clare

Shipping is free over $45.00 orders with Farnell, so just make sure you order over $45 worth of stuff and you won’t pay freight.

The issue is the following line.

element14 offers free delivery for all orders over the value of $45. The shipping charge displayed below is a guide only. Any orders exceeding 20kg which includes dimensional weight calculations will be subject to additional freight charges and shipped via an off-peak service. Billing amount for freight charges will be processed in your next invoice. Express or Standard courier delivery is available; please contact our sales office to discuss options.

The shelves on the description say they are 10kg each.

I ordered two of the shelves we're discussing, plus a few others items (my order was over $45) and I was charged no shipping.

Until they change their behaviour, the standard e14 practice appears to be to charge nothing for shipping for orders over $45. Personally, after a number of orders, I haven't yet experienced any weight restrictions applied to that (volumetric or otherwise). I also believe in the past on at least one occasion I've ordered less that $45 and paid no shipping fees.

If in doubt, why don't you a) go through the shopping cart process and see what the charges are? b) give them a call and ask them? They're normally pretty good to deal with on the phone.

Orders over $45 and under 20kg are free of freight which is why there is $0.00 showing for freight. However as you are ordering qty 10 of these shelves you order will attract a freight charge. You will be contacted with a quote for the freight charge prior to your order being shipped.

I ordered two of those shelving units and shipping fee was $12.95 AUD plus GST.

Maybe if you ordered three that would put you over the $45 spending threshold and you'd get free shipping.
Maybe it would still be under the 20kg weight threshold... I'm skeptical whether those things are really 10 kg each.

Nifty hints, Wish i could setup something similar.

I am currently working on some web based indexing software.
I want to be able to search for something or pick from a list and find which draw it is in.
I have given each one of the storage units a letter. and then each draw is a simple X/Y number.

Hopefully when I am done il be able to just type in something and it spit out a nice list of which draws i need to look in.

So I was looking at the price of the dividers for these shelves seems overkill given the price of the shelves.

Has anyone come up with an alternative to shelling out like 30$ for 60 of the dividers?

I Have a pile of photo paper just the plain non glossy stuff folded 2x in half and it fits very closely.

I was considering firing up the reprap and printing some dividers but I need to find some models, I tried to make a model but yeah no good at 3d modelling.

Marc Alexander and I bought one packet of dividers between us so we'd
have exact dimensions for reference, and the plan is to fire up our
shiny new laser cutter and make a bunch more. I'll need to find some
appropriate plastic stock first, but if it works out OK it's possible
we could cut extras for people who want them.

You could maybe use something like ice-cream tub lids. That would seem to be about the right thickness, but there might be a little bit of bend in it.

I might just try something really basic, just a little rectangle the
right thickness and see how printing it goes.

Just be aware that there's a slight "easement" in the shape of the
dividers: they're not exactly rectangular, but slightly narrower at
the bottom than at the top.

When I get home tonight I'll apply the calipers to one of the original
dividers and let you know the exact dimensions.

Jon's right, the drawers have a slight mould easing in units like this.
If you don't need to store very small parts, then any divider that stays
in place is enough, but if you want to separate e.g. SMD resisters, a
tight fit is advisable - right down to the corner radius at the bottom.

And for SMD parts, just get a flat tackle-box with moulded-in dividers.
I have several of the 18-box type with snap-down lids. Much less
frustrating that trying to find the right part when they've jumped ship.
Ask me how I know :)

Clifford.

When the space settles down a bit I would like to look at making a
vacuum former which is great at making drawers with rounded corners
for small components. Please talk to me if there is an interest. The
other option is to get some made externally so we don't have to store
a machine.
