Hi

First of all, I remember writing an email similar to this before -- except I can't find it. Not in the CCHS mailing list, not in my outbox. not in my drafts folder. So if anyone already got it -- sorry, but here it comes again:

I need the electronics and the steppers for the MendelMax.

If someone else needs stuff as well, please reply, so we might get a bulk order.

I am tempted to get this sandwich, consisting of:

- 1 x Ard. Mega2560 board
- 1 x ramps 1.4
- 5 x A4988 stepper driver
- 5 x heat sink
- 5 x conductive sticker (aluminum)

Price would be a bit under $160.

For steppers so far I have only seen this:

I particularly like the 0.9 degree angle.

5 of these would be $130 -- $20 short of the free shipping...

Of course I could get the Arduino from them, for $66 -- and then 'only' need to buy this:

But I'd still be worse off.

Anyway, any suggestions? Anyone who wants to bulk buy? Anyone who has the items sitting in his house collecting dust and willing to part with them for a reasonable price?

Cheers,

Holger

If you're after an original Arduino, I believe Chris Pendlebury is trying to organise something about distribution of them.

If you're after a clone, then they can be had fairly cheap on eBay. Bulk-buying them however may save some more.

- 1 x ramps 1.4

Rob B has a bunch of blank RAMPS 1.4 boards (20 of them I think), and is organising components to mount on them. These should prove much cheaper than buying them as kits or pre-built.

- 5 x A4988 stepper driver
- 5 x heat sink
- 5 x conductive sticker (aluminum)

I'm sure that more people will want some of these, so we can definitely pool together and save. I want a few more myself.

I particularly like the 0.9 degree angle.

Same with these, though I already have my set, but I'm sure some might be needed.

Note: I know that Rob B bought a bunch of steppers a while ago - he may have some extras left over.

The white PCB is a little strange for poluluo stepper drivers and would want to be sure these drivers are not stepsticks or other home brew driver first as well and don't cut the mustard

Hello

Ok, I will not buy it right now. I will instead come to hackspace on Tuesday evening and hope to find some like-minded people there.
Rob, if you are reading this: please let me know what you can offer. And whether you will be there.

If anyone else wants to participate in the bulk buy, then please let me know.

Cheers,

Holger

Also, you may want to talk to Rob B. about getting your steppers, he ordered a big batch and he'll re-sell them to people in the community so you can get steppers at a relatively good price with minimal lead time and without paying for shipping.

I too can vouch for AusXmods. I've bought a number of things from them and never had an issue.

Hi there,

I've been reading up on the MendelMax, and I'd be interested in a bulk
buy for the electronics for it.

I'll be oversizing the machine slightly so might need to size up one
or two of the steppers also.

I should be able to make the next Tuesday hackerspace session if you
want to catch up then, or send me an email

Hi Mark,

Just a reminder that we're running a 3D printing session on Monday the 28th between 6pm and 10pm (I'll send out a proper reminder later this week). This is the day before next Tuesdays normal hackerspace meeting.

Note: I would not be surprised if a number of the 3D printing people don't turn up to the Tuesday meeting. That is not to say that you should not go on Tuesday, but just in case you can only make one or the other (like some people), I thought it best to mention.

I just bought a lot of the parts from Rob -- All I am missing now is the
RAMPS board (I think) and the printed parts.

I will more likely come to Monday's 3d printer session, and then skip
Tuesday.

Okay then.

Looks like the Tuesday evening (and Saturday) crowd need to fight back
... and start doing cooler projects than the Monday night 3D printer mob !

Definitely the laser cutter and the milling machine (although they might
defect to the CNC-side and hook-up with those 3D printers).

Security access system (for Kent Lane) ? Robotics ? Android (IoT)
hacking ? Quadcopters and UAVs ? Games, e.g laser tag or some 8-bit
stuff ? Wearables ? e-bikes ? Mechanical skills, e.g lathe, welding
? Catapults anyone ?

More seriously ... we should get some more momentum around electronics
(workshops), micro-controllers (including FPGA) and networking (for
small embedded devices).

We've had quite a few people join this year ... and supporting common
interests, group projects, workshops / tutorials ... is important.

So, please throw out some ideas about what (loosely) structured
activities you'd like to be a part of. If there is enough support for a
given common interest ... then, we can make that happen. In addition to
the usual free-for-all that happens naturally.

Hi,

The only Australian shop I find that sells the finished RAMPS seems to bilbycnc; their price is $85.

Am I correct?

Does that include the stepper motor drivers?

If not, I really think that's a bit of a ripoff to be honest, since there's really bugger all on a RAMPS except some pin headers and some female headers and some more headers and a few capacitors and a couple of MOSFETs.

Well, it's not that it's cheaper overseas:

Ultimachine: $ 85
http://ultimachine.com/content/ramps-pre-assembled-kit

Mixshop: C$ 82
http://store.mixshop.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13&products_id=91&zenid=65043atev23svpnf9f9ork4i05

A2A printer: C$ 85
http://www.a2aprinter.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=33&product_id=34

reprapworld: 46.21
http://reprapworld.com/?products_details&products_id=50&cPath=1591_1593

Apparently putting it all together makes it expensive.

Cheers,

Holger

Without the stepper drivers im guessing its about $20-30 worth of parts. + PCB.

Ok, maybe I have a job soldering some time next week. Is it complicated?
Can someone help me a bit? It's not the first time I solder, but I've
never done it at Hackspace -- and when I did solder surface mounts with
a soldering iron, it became a mess. Andy told me that there's an easier
way using an oven, but I've never done that.

Also: Where do I get the parts?

This is exactly the reason why the HackerSpace exists ... to help.

I'm sure that during any meeting, there will be someone there with
decent soldering experience, who will be happy to help out.

We are gradually working towards having the "surface mount / toaster
oven" process up-and-running. But, at the time, I thought we were
talking about SMD in general ... I didn't realize you were specifically
interested in the RAMPS board.

A RAMPS board looks like it has little or no SMD components. The only
serious SMD components are on the plug-able Polulu stepper motor driver
boards (pre-assembled).

Making a RAMPS board will be a typical through-hole component soldering
task.

Note: Most of the components (not connectors) on a v1.4 RAMPS board are SMD, not thru-hole.

Exceptions: PTC fuses, power diode, FETs.

Ah, sorry for the misleading statement.

In that case, getting the CCHS surface-mount equipment up-and-running
would be good ... and perhaps building your RAMPS board can be a driver
for that goal.

Maybe it would be easier to get some of the older ramps boards made.

I think the main difference between 1.4 and 1.3 was the conversion to SMD. I
think that the 1.4 still has all the same features.

Might be worth thinking about.

FWIW: Rob had 20 x v1.4 boards made, hence the boards are already around.

Rob also has some of the components, but not all of the caps. I looked for them on e14, but could not see suitable caps available. Will at some point check Digikey, who should have them.

HI..

I think if you talked to Johnny at UltiMachine.com he might do you a good deal on RAMPS 1.4 boards with the SMD installed, the last lot I brought worked out to be $10.00 per board plus postage.

Thanks

Are you sure? Because on the website, the kit (board and parts) costs
$50, $15 more if you want at least the SMD parts soldered on. Plus shipping.

I still see mainly $80+ boards, but I am wondering whether I can get
some parts from jaycar or somewhere.

Mouser has all the parts for RAMPS 1.4. See the BOM from the Wiki. It has all mouser part numbers. Will cost about $30 USD for the parts plus another $30 for shipping. You can get a empty board for under $10. So $70 plus tools, soldier and solder paste should be all you need to build your own RAMPS 1.4. $85 seems like a fair price for an assembled (tested ?) one.

FWIW: On the RAMPS 1.4 boards, there are:

 25 x Resistors (all SMD)
 10 x Capacitors (all SMD)
 4 x LEDs (all SMD)
 3 x MOSFETs
 2 x Diodes
 2 x PTC fuses
 1 x Push-button switch

Also lots of female sockets for the Pololu drivers, header pins to connect to the Mega/for jumpers/etc, and also connectors for power/MOSFET outputs/motors.

Note: Anything not listed as SMD above are through-hole components.

You will also need heat sinks for the  Pololu drivers and one on the heatbed MOSFET.

FWIW: Most of the steppers in older printers are 7.5 degrees steps, which means to get the required resolution equivalent to a 1.8 degree stepper, you'd have to gear them down. They also tend to have tiny drive shafts, with odd size gears you will need to interface with.

This is doable if you're building your own machine, but with a set design, it's a lot harder.

BTW: We've now found a suitable supplier for all the RAMPS parts and are now just sorting out the Bill of Materials to ensure we're getting good pricing.

eg: In some cases it's cheaper to buy 25 parts than 20, some connectors are cheaper than others from a different company, and some capacitors are cheaper at higher voltages than is minimally required. Everything is functionally identical in circuit.
