Hi all,

I am thinking about registering a domain name, preferably a .com rather
than .com.au.

Can anyone recommend a provider or a way of going about it?

My priority is to keep the name indefinitely and not to lose it some
day, for whatever reason, to a squatter.

After that, I will be interested in web/email hosting, so I'm interested
in your thoughts on this too.

Have fun,
Darren

I use https://ventraip.com.au/ for my domains and for some basic cPanel hosting services.

I find the value is good, they have good support, a nice web based account management portal and best of all because they are located in Australia you have some rights around chasing them up for any complications.

I'm using crazydomains.com.au because they're cheap ;-)

People tell me that hover.com (hoover?) are good.

Don't use godaddy.com, people frequently report bad things about them.

Domain names are always leased, no-one ever 'owns' their name. Leases are
usually 2 years. You can expect to pay about $20 a year.

What about DNS hosting? The registration of your name may not include
hosting, you might want both to be provided by the same company, or you
might wish to separate them. I personally separate them and host the DNS
myself. zoneedit.com provides free DNS hosting if your site is not very
busy. A friend of mine uses AWS.

As for e-mail and web hosting I'm not sure, I run my own services on a VPS.
I rent my VPS from prgmr.com, but if you want to set it up quickly prgmr.com
may not be able to help, they're going through an infrastructure move so the
support queue is pretty long at the moment. It's also worth checking out
AWS for this, especially if you fit in the free usage tier.

It's smart to avoid running your own services if you can, in general, keep
it simple.

Ciao.

If you do use AWS or run your own stuff don't forget to consider backups.

That's about as glowing as any recommendation I'm likely to receive!
Although, their various agreements do waive pretty much any conceivable
right to chase them up.

I've signed up with Ventra IP. Thanks very much.

I don't yet have any web hosting, as for now I just need to get my new
email address set up with forwarding.

Have fun,
Darren

I've used a few services - thought they might help you or others:

 - we're using serversaurus.com.au for euriskomelbourne.com. They're good, local have reasonably good and responsive support via zendesk. Reasonable set of cpanel-based installation scripts.  I haven't had any real issues so far with hosting.  Nick and team are really good folks, and hey: they support electron workshop, an aspiring support a hackerspace too!

 - I used siteground.com for another project recently. Unbelievably cheap. Excellent and responsive technical support: I think it was free for the first 30 or maybe 90 days.  Most tech staff appear to be based in eastern europe, although the servers appear to be US based.  Great range of cpanel install scripts.  Performance has been fine to get started with a small number of users: no idea about scaling and performance under greater load.  If you wanted a test site to check something out, this is an option worth considering.

 - For domain registrations, I've used a variety of people in the past.  Agree that godaddy - although initially cheap - can be painful and more expensive for renewals.  I've used hover through its various incarnations starting as a nameplanet.com customer. I have a love/ hate relationship with them, leaning towards the less positive side.  I've used enom through Google Apps: they're just OK, with a dated, less than user-friendly interface. I used namecheap.com recently for 4 domain-name registrations related to eurisko (with whoisgaurd support).  Reasonable value at ~$42, and pretty easy-to-use service.

I've had a good experience using joker.com for many years now.
