Hello,

First of all, thanks everyone for the support on my previous thread (special kudos to Rob Brittain for his hands on help). I now feel even more compelled to make a move and give back to CCHS, presto :)

After looking around the lab, I noticed that there are no fume extractors on the soldering area. Independently on whether you are lead or non-leaded solder aficionados, I think it's a must have PPE.

So I bought an active carbon filter on Aliexpress:

And I wandered yesterday in search for ~12V computer fans in the various junk bins... couldn't find many so let me know if I missed some corner or if some of you have hoarded some in your respective pile of scrap at home or elsewhere ;)

Cheers!
Roman

PD: As a fun add-on, I thought about having a photoelectric smoke detector next to it, might be a fun side project, but for now I just want to have a quick and dirty MVP (filter, fans, power supply jacks and a lean frame/box to hold it).

Hi Roman

Thanks for taking an interest in this, great to see such initiative and yes, its important to improve safety where possible.

We do have a Booroondara council grant coming through, which includes spending on some fume filters amongst other safety oriented things.  I believe we nominated some Altronics models, but its possible to spend on other models, or make our own if we want to.

I believe we have to sign a funding agreement before making any purchases that will later be reimbursed.   I'll check where this is at, because it can't be far away.

regards
Lachlan

Alright, thanks Lachlan, glad to see it's sorted out, I'll look at
other ways I can help then ;)

I just heard back that we should receive funding agreement in the mail early next week.

Roman you'd be most welcome to assist with the fume filters, and other purchases too if you like.  For the fume filters we can purchase complete units (as originally planned), or purchase the parts to make units (probably more units) but there are some minor constraints to comply with

That's fantastic!

If there's enough budget we could go for this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0053PR4G0/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=rossmanngroup-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B0053PR4G0&linkId=b30ec1cfc5638a33cdcda41c3ed0ad7d

Alternatively this:

https://www.amazon.com/Aoyue-Benchtop-Solder-Smoke-Absorber/dp/B001RLZGKK/ref=sr_1_5?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1515046539&sr=1-5&keywords=hakko+fume+extractor

And NOT this one, it's really bad:

https://www.amazon.com/Hakko-FA400-04-Bench-ESD-Safe-Absorber/dp/B00FZPSEY4/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1515046539&sr=1-1&keywords=hakko+fume+extractor

For DIY, if someone has spare fans or an old vacuum cleaner, it's
relatively easy to setup and works as well as any of the above with
the appropiate carbon filter attached properly at the end of the hose.

Cheers!

Roman our funding from Booroondara council came through today.   Our budget for this bit is $262, that was nominally for 4 of the Altronics units via wholesale.

What do you think - purchase these or do something custom?

Those Altronics seem good enough IMHO ;)

I only had a brief look at those 4 Altronics (Micron) fume extractors before they did their tour of LCA, but my impression is that they are really solid.

Looking forward to getting them on the benches at CCHS for some feedback

cheers

They have those at Docklands library, relatively loud and one has to operate very close to have all fumes in :-/

ok, but luckily we don't need to be as quiet as a library here

If you're up for a project, lets get a shopping list together for the next Booroondara grant.

We were talking last night about what other things might be useful, and safety related items are relatively easy to apply for.

Its nice what he did 3D printing the couplings, but many of these reducers and the like already exist as low cost moulded items, such as the 200mm duct to floor rectangular vents we're using with the welding fume extraction

Turns out the smoke detection idea I had on fume extractors was not
that far-fetched:
