Homeownership is the most important asset among the elderly in Europe, but very little is known about gender and living arrangement differences in this domain. This paper aims at exploring patterns of exclusion from homeownership among middle-aged and older Europeans from a gender perspective, and with a special focus on their household composition. The analysis is based on the fourth wave of the "Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe" and includes a sub-sample of about 56,000 individuals aged 50 or over, living in 16 European countries. We estimated a set of multinomial logit models to examine the probability of being either tenant or rent-free occupiers versus homeowners. Our findings show that women are generally more likely to be excluded from homeownership than men. Nevertheless, a closer look suggests that the gender gap in homeownership is essentially generated by compositional differences between men and women, with the most relevant factor being household type. Older women are almost as twice as likely as men to live alone, which is associated-other things being equal-with a particular low likelihood to be homeowners virtually in every European country.

His exclusion is especially tough to swallow since Divock Origi, who was called up instead, has been very poor since he arrived. Ibrahimovic could have helped more, or at least that is the feeling currently.

Unfortunately, there was no opinion issued, just a minute entry on the docket, so it's hard to tell at this point precisely why the court ruled in favor of the company. Interestingly, the company argued, as the second basis for its claim, that Rule 14a-8 does not permit the submission of shareholder proposals by proxy: since Chevedden was not himself a shareholder, there was no basis in the rule allowing him to act by proxy on behalf of the two shareholders other than "for the limited purpose of presenting the shareholder's proposal at the shareholders' meeting." As noted in the blog, the SEC has not looked favorably on the "proposal-by-proxy" argument as a basis for exclusion of shareholder proposals. (As some of us know from bitter experience, the SEC won't even accede to a request that Chevedden be identified as a proponent of his own proposals.) Going to court to seek exclusion (in Texas at least) may turn out to be the wave of the future, at least for those companies aggravated enough to bear the substantial expense involved. Might court action also have the effect of deterring future proposals?

The rapid development of social media has had a profound impact on how people access and share information in China. Some researchers suggest that the new social media has broken through the monolithic propaganda of traditional Chinese media and brought a diversity of topics and perspectives into view. Others argue that platforms such as Weibo (microblogging) largely privilege the opinions of well-educated, middle class individuals, keeping working class industrial and rural workers' voices on the margins. The question remains: has the development of social media bridged or deepened the "digital divide"? In an effort to address this question, this paper explores the appearance of members of a "new generation" of migrant workers on Sina Weibo, the most popular microblogging service in China. Drawing on the results a study of Sina Weibo posts, reposts, and authors, this paper offers three main arguments: (1) Weibo is not only a means for sharing information and expressing opinions, it is also a platform where users mobilize to improve the lives of migrant workers in cities; (2) Weibo provides an emotional outlet, offering members of the "new generation" of migrant workers the opportunity to express dissatisfaction with the bitter reality of their lives and a longing for a better life; and (3) The most influential users of this microblogging platform tend to be media figures, scholars, government officials, and other individuals from outside the community. The author concludes that more effort needs to be made so that, instead of creating new inequalities, social media technology can be of assistance to members of socially marginalized groups.

The skin discoloration may be caused by black rot or scurf. Both diseases are caused by a fungus. Black rot causes black spots with tiny black specks on roots in the ground and in storage. The affected sweet potatoes taste bitter. There is no chemical control available. The fungus overwinters in sweet potato debris and weeds for more than two years, so garden sanitation is important. Remove all pieces of debris, and plant sweet potatoes in a different area for at least two years. Purchase certified slips or sweet potatoes.

By the nature of the case this question cannot receive a perfectlydefinite answer, except in relation to the actual state of opinion andcustom in a particular age and country. But we may say generally thatany gain thus obtainable by the community would be purchased at toogreat a cost if it involved bitter disappointment to individuals, of akind calculated to excite universal sympathy;---as would be the case ifa man's children or grandchildren lost their inheritance through hisaccidental intestacy. I do not, however, think that this result wouldfollow in England from the adoption of Bentham's scheme fordistributing intestate inheritance. The chief points in this are:---

  1. That half the common property shall go to a widow after herhusband's death, and the rest be divided among his descendants, ifany; and that, on the decease of a widow, her property shall besimilarly divided among her descendants.
  2. That there shall be equal division ``by stocks'' and not by heads;i.e. that if a child dies before his father, leaving children, his share shall be divided among his children in equal proportions;and so of all descendants.
  3. That if a person has no descendants, his property shall go to hisparents; or, if either parent is dead, to his or her descendants.
  4. That, in default of near relations---as defined by (3)---it shallescheat to the State.

Here the exclusion of primogeniture and of the rights of cousins andgrandparents, involved in recommendations (2) and (4), are to be notedas markedly opposed to existing English law. On both these pointsJ. S. Mill is in substantial agreement with Bentham; only he wouldpress the principle of (4) still further, holding that ``no rightsshould be acknowledged in collaterals, and that the property of thosewho have neither ascendants nor descendants should escheat to theState.'' It seems to me that, on account of the relations ofaffection that normally attach any person to the other descendants ofhis parents, Mill's proposed rule would, in cases of accidentalintestacy, cause painful disappointment to natural expectations. But Ithink that the actual expectations of remoter relatives are mainlycreated by the law; and that, if the law were altered, they would notexist, under ordinary circumstances, to any extent worth considering.I think, therefore, that the exclusion of collaterals in case ofintestacy---in the milder degree proposed by Bentham---would furnish alegitimate source of revenue to the community, it being understoodthat any hardship that might arise from it in special cases, in whichthe declared and unrevoked intention of a deceased person had beenprevented from realisation by sudden death, might be recognised andremedied by the grant of a share of the inheritance.

On a positive note, there is promising data on the anti-obesity effects of compounds called isohumulones, or iso-α-acids. These compounds are the major bitter components in beer and come from the female hop plant (Humulus lupulus L.). As shown in Figure 1, iso-α-acids are converted from α-acids during brewing, and impart flavour and bitterness to beer. These iso-α-acids have been shown to help obese individuals with pre-diabetes by reducing hyperglycemia and body fat content. In addition, iso-α-acids have also been shown to prevent diet-induced obesity in two different strains of mice. However, one drawback of using iso-α-acids is their very strong bitter profile, which makes them quite unpalatable at the concentrations required to be effective. Although an isohumulone pill would bypass these palatability issues, for reasons unknown, it has not been widely considered.

The predominant source of bitterness in beer is from the α-acid compounds present in hops. These compounds break down into iso-α-acids during brewing and in isolation may provide benefits that reduce body fat in animals and humans.

All participants had to adhere to strict criteria that included the exclusion of any diets or dietary supplements, medication that affected fat or lipid metabolism, and excessive alcohol consumption or foods enriched in hops. They were excluded if they had any current metabolic disorders or other serious diseases, such as diabetes or heart disease. Participants were interviewed regarding their lifestyle to ascertain eligibility and compliance. They recorded daily calorie intake, physical activity and subjective symptoms. By the end of the test, evaluation of non-compliance resulted in the final numbers of 91 participants in the active group and 87 participants in the placebo group.

Instead, it is suggested that MHE may accelerate energy expenditure, rather than inhibiting energy intake through the control of appetite or satiety. MHBA has been reported to enhance thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue in rodents. It does this by binding to bitter taste receptors in the GI tract. This receptor binding was shown to cause the downstream activation of sympathetic nerve activity that regulates energy and glucose homeostasis in brown adipose tissue.

Over the years there have been several studies on the health benefits of consuming hop-derived iso-α-acids, including regulation of glucose metabolism, anti-inflammatory activity and amelioration of blood lipid profiles. More recently, matured hop bittering components were shown to influence brown adipose tissue in rodents through activation of the sympathetic nerves that innervate it. By activating brown adipose tissue, these researchers were able to demonstrate that a functional food could be used to prevent pathological body fat accumulation.
