So our radically trimmed down web server configuration has, according to our circulation and cataloguing staff, not been good from a performance perspective. More network timeouts today than yesterday.
On the other hand, we have had no dangers of running out of memory, so we don't have the complete failure situation we had yesterday morning.
I'm therefore going to try ramping up the available processes while keeping the keepalive values low, to see if the timeouts are due to a lack of available web server processes, or because their connection isn't being kept alive. There will be a little bit of disruption around 1:45 as I restart the web server processes; things should smooth out a minute or so after.
I don't like changing settings and disrupting the service during the middle of the day, but I'm also keenly interested in getting feedback--so I hope you'll excuse this, and let me know if you see any difference (better or worse) after the restart around 1:45.
